There is medical and recreational MJ.
There are, as mentioned in the video, immigration enforcement sanctuaries.

All of these are example of returning to federalism. The feds could crack down at any time, but some things become too big to tackle. MJ is one example of that.

Can you think of other areas in which states could (re-)assert control and get away with it? I think it's a good trend, but I'm coming up blank.

I think if a governor refused to allow his National Guard to be sent to fight in a foreign war, he might have a good case. Especially if he made a big PR deal over it and took it all the way to the Supremes.

I was shocked to see so many National Guard troops in Iraq.

Also - I think the return to localized freeway speed limits is another example where they have pulled back their independence.
The feds forced everyone to go to 55mph in the 70's. Now plenty of rural states have 80mph limits.

A big factor in regaining independence will have to be less reliance on Federal funds. As long as the states are addicted to that money, they will have to kneel when the feds threaten to withhold it.
