Same here. And, I have an extremely wide vocabulary. By high school I'd achieved the vocabulary of a journalist - about 50,000 words.

I generally can read a book without encountering any words I do not know.

However, I did read one astounding book this summer.

After reading about the fourth unknown (to me) word early on in the book I decided to start circling each of the future ones in the book. I ended up circling somewhere between 20-40 words.

I achieved that vocabulary in high school from two years of without fail looking up every word I did not know. Sometimes I'd have to look up the same word nine times because I honestly told myself I still did not remember what it means.

Because I was outside reading that book without a dictionary I did not look up the meaning of any of those words.

But I did put it on my things to do to put all those words in a list and to look up all their definitions and put them next to their respective words.

Once I do that I will put that list in a Topic here as a challenge to any to see which of those words that they do know.

It is, though, one of those things I may never get to. Or, it could be one of those things I impulsively decide I am going to do now.

No. That was not a book I'd never prior been aware of. However, it becomes yet another book that I do become aware of through this forum and then proceed to buy (just came under that $8.00 soft limit).

As I stated, I'd read the paper version. Since I just saw the Kindle version was low priced I bought it. It will make that task of finding those word definitions go faster. Plus, it is an A+ book. I highly recommend it.

I have a dictionary from the mid-nineties* and I remember the intro states that the average educated American has a vocabulary of about 100,000 words.

It's now a 10 year old book. I'm curious to know if you can find it. What are libraries' policies on holding on to books that old? I know that they have limited space and are always bringing in new ones. Logically that means others need to go. I always assumed that they did it on the basis of how infrequently a book had been checked out and how recently. I'm frequently surprised when I buy used library books that are only a few years old.

I just checked on my end. Neither that book or any other books by that author is available in any of the 100 or so libraries accessible to me in western & central Massachusetts. One of the prime reasons why I maintain my own personal library.

They had 2 copies in the Pinellas county system. Just placed a hold so it will be delivered to my local library.

Back when I used to buy books I usually donated them to the library when I was done reading them. This was because my first wife was a book hoarder and when she died I had hundreds of books on shelves to get rid of so I resolved never to make anybody else have to do that.

I realized that now that I have the Kindle version of the book that I can now easily in my list put each of the words in their sentences so that they can be seen in their context.

I think I donated about 3,000 books in 2013? Still have thousands and thousands left and continue accumulate them.

Someone else is going to have to do for me what you did for your wife's collection.
