Anyone know whether we are required to file an FBAR form (deadline is 30 June) if we own shares in an ETF holding its gold outside the U.S.?  Thanks.

Speak to your accountant.  I just filed for unallocated held by Perth Mint.  It can be argued either way, but I decided it wasn't worth the hassle to take the risk.

Wonk, thanks.  I can't be the the only one, besides you, who might have a question about this...

I would help if I could, I just don't have any exposure to this situation or knowledge about it.

I emailed my accountant about it regarding GTU.  She might know.

So, in plain English, any ETF with gold held abroad requires an FBAR?  This would affect IAU, SGOL, AGOL, GLD, et al., all of which have deposits, whole or in part, outside the U.S.  I'm holding SGOL in a Fidelity IRA account and have received no info about this to date from Fidelity.
