According to the magazine, if you turned the runes on their heads they revealed a spell to make your enemy's ears into kumquats.

Had a kumquat tree in my backyard as a kid. Loved eating their sweet skin, and they were also the perfect size for throwing at my siblings to cause pain without doing any real damage.

Yes, that's primarily why it exists. I'm making a sticky post which will be at the top that describes how to do it.
