A clue if such a forgery might be in place is to hover over a link and see what the text at the bottom left (of Firefox at least) of the status bar shows.
Safer is to never follow links from web pages to any important web sites, but type the address in directly. Not even that is always safe however, as in some cases name servers get hacked at they might redirect you to a fake site.


in a forum you can also use the "quote" feature to tell you what the link really looks like, just hit reply with quote and the un-hidden version of the link shows in the quote
