Wow. Talk about using a medical journal to promote what just happens to be the Democratic Party platform. Although, even they wouldn't be dumb enough to include this little zinger:
Ending hunger and homelessness in the US. These are completely addressable issues.
Sure it is...Dr. Berwick, you first since you're so into it. Donate 90% of your income to the cause and let's see what happens.
This is the journal of the AMA, which last I checked is a nonprofit organization. Wonder if this could be enough material for a complaint to the effect that since they are now taking political sides, they should lose their tax exemption.

They obviously should, but unfortunately there are two standards: one for conservatives and one for progressives.

There is a basic observation in the first few paragraphs that is quite interesting: economic disparities have a greater impact on health than anything that the medical community can offer.
It's when the author starts talking about what to do with this information that he goes off the rails.
Probably the most appropriate response is to do nothing. It's outside of the province of medical care - and as discussed in other threads, it's impossible for anyone outside of the affected communities to fix the problem, and more welfare will only make things worse.
Similar analogy: a war. The number of people (especially young men) killed in Europe as a direct consequence of WWII was large enough that in some countries like France, the population didn't recover for decades. Very sad, but also not something that the medical community could have been expected to do anything about.
Also, doctors are not the only group with an interest in public health. Sanitation engineers for example....you could argue that they as a group have saved more lives than doctors. I would love to inform this guy of that and watch him self-destruct.

There is actually something that could be done to address this problem.
End the War on Drugs, the War on Poverty, and the War on Men.
Nothing else will work, and the cost savings would be immense.
As for who has saved more lives, yes, I would say that public sanitation would get the prize. Doctors can provide valuable services but overall life expectancy improvements mostly aren't from medical care.
