"The state of New York will soon allow accused criminals to inspect their own crime scenes and will quickly provide them with a complete list of named witnesses testifying against them as part of a series of new jailbreak laws."

If it's bad for landlords it's also bad for tenants, unless those tenants don't have to deal with landlords.
You would think NYC would have figured that out after 75 years of "temporary rent control", but no such luck.

This was a one sided bill that only benefits tenants

Yikes!

I read a sanitized version of the bill in (I think) the NY times, but this is kinda scary. Breitbart however isn't the world's most unimpeachable source. Here's a better one:

Sadly, it says the same thing. 1970s-80s NYC, here we come...

I can only hope that the law, or the seriously problematic parts of it, will be challenged. If not...probably not a good idea to wait around for the real estate values to collapse. Which also happened in the 1980s.

I understand that, but that kind of "tenant friendly" law is part of the reason that rents are so high in NYC. Which of course is bad for tenants.

This is exactly the same as the problem with "employee-friendly" laws that penalize employers, which cause less employment and more difficulty with economic growth.

Right. Remember, if you're going to panic, panic first.

How about a nice house in Sun City, which I imagine would leave you a lot of money left over after selling your apartment in NYC?

We're moving there next year.

The more I read about this "bail reform", the angrier I get. District attorneys, police, Republicans in NY state legislature and others have made strong statements against the law. It's monumental stupidity at best, and an outright attack on crime victims at worst. It's guaranteed to result in an explosion in crime, since it's now technically impossible to prosecute 99% of cases. All a criminal has to do to escape justice is not show up in court. And to take care of the rest, i.e. the REALLY violent crimes, the criminal will now have your name and address at his disposal if you're going to be a witness, plus the right to enter the home of the crime victim if the crime was committed there. Under those circumstances it's hard to imagine anyone wanting to press charges.

This atrocity was apparently cooked up between Mayor de Blasio and Governor Cuomo, and both are completely indifferent to these concerns. I can only hope that this law will be quickly challenged and struck down. Otherwise...well tech, keep the light on for me!

Are you aware of this book? Punishment Without Crime: How Our Massive Misdemeanor System Traps the Innocent and Makes America More Unequal https://smile.amazon.com/Punishment-Wit ... l_huc_item

I read it. Gives the other side of the present bail system.

Don't know the specifics of the bill. Seems like it might be an attempt to solve some of the problems with the present bail system as described in the book. But according to your above description it may also be causing a new set of problems. However, her book is strictly focused on misdemeanors, while I'd certainly assume that "the REALLY violent crimes" you cite above would NOT be misdemeanors and would, therefore, fall outside of her advocacy for bail reform.

This is the book's author: https://twitter.com/ANatapoff. Quickly looking through her feed I do not see any references to any changes in the New York bail system.

If you combine this with the victim disarmament ("gun control") laws in NYC, it will be a free-for-all for criminals, which is apparently what Democrats want. At least, that is what happens in virtually every big city where they are in charge. Is that really just a coincidence?

No problem; there's plenty of room here, and a lot to do in Sun City.

The Supreme Court is hearing the first case involving nyc licensing in decades right now .

It actually forced nypd to remove some of the restrictions they had on our premise permits ..nypd did not want this case to be heard so they thought if they could throw a bone to permit holders the case would be dropped ..but nope the Supreme Court is hearing it ... we don’t expect to get carry permits but we do expect a lot of things nypd does is now going to be deemed illegal so they can not take back the bones they through us when the case is over

Yes, I know about that case. What the Supremes should actually do is say "All laws, regulations, and rules that infringe on the right to keep and bear arms are unconstitutional and are hereby rendered null and void with retroactive effect".

Not that they will, of course.

Just in case our NY residents need some inspiration for the New Year. ;)

Where are New Yorkers headed?
