Sure, I'd agree with that. I think Musk was just trying to make a pragmatic distinction rather than a philosophical one.

I agree with Musk, based on my experience. I also think both are needed. Scientists tend to mainly speak science. Engineers can understand science speak AND translate the science speak into practical applications AND sell those applications to laymen with the money to fund both the science and the engineering. Synergy at work!

Family legend has it we are distantly related to Lord George Murray (who my grandfather was supposedly named after), participant in the battle of Culloden, and sixth son of John Murray, 1st Duke of Atholl. That branch of the family came to America after a 12 year old boy was kidnaped in 1720 by Brittish sailors/traders in Edinburg. I believe he spent his early years as an apprentice to a Presbyterian preacher before migrating to what is now West Virginia. Thanks for the beautiful Ella Roberts rendition of Loch Lomond and dredging up my family memories. I'll have to have a wee dram to celebrate later today. The photography in the YouTube video is a lot more spectacular than I remember Loch Lomond being from my vantage point.
