I had to laugh out loud at that one. That's probably pretty true.MediumTex wrote: Seriously, though, I get the impression that most internet investment discussions tend to be mostly made up of men, probably because men seem to be more fascinated by market risks and are more willing to engage in lengthy arguments with people they don't know over things that don't matter.

26. Engaged. Saving so that some day (sooner than later) I can work because I want to, not because I have to.

I asked the question because I was wondering what people would say. Those are excellent points. I suppose we all have some Asperger-ish tendencies.
There is also a tendency for women to be averse to anything involving graphs and numbers. I'm in a fairly exacting field of science, and when I go to conferences I find that women make up only about 5% of attendees. Not sure why, but social pressures are not to be discounted. Remember the Barbie doll programmed to say "Math class is hard"?
I wonder if this translates to women being more likely to make poor savings and investment decisions, and thus having a tougher time of it in retirement. It would be fine if the the U.S. culture encouraged saving rather than spending, and if the "default" investment, usually a target retirement account, were handled more responsibly. But, I would hardly call 80-90% equities a responsible retirement investment choice.

M.T. Why would we encourage any particular group of people to participate in these forums over another group?
Re: How Old Are You And What Is Your Goal Using The PP?
I assume you are kidding, but I have always thought it was interesting how men in general seem to show WAY more interest in investing than women, even though women seem to make better investment decisions than men, perhaps because they are apt to take fewer risks in their approach to investing.Reub wrote: M.T. Behavior that seem to occur more often in men than women like very aggressive investing has some of the same qualities of foolishness that many forms of violent behavior have--i.e., the actor is engaging in basically irrational behavior that is often self-destructive, but when it works out well it can create an intense feeling of satisfaction and even be celebrated.
Q: “Do you have funny shaped balloons?”
A: “Not unless round is funny.”

Good times can ensue when you channel these tendencies in a positive, entertaining direction.MediumTex wrote: Behavior that seem to occur more often in men than women like very aggressive investing has some of the same qualities of foolishness that many forms of violent behavior have--i.e., the actor is engaging in basically irrational behavior that is often self-destructive, but when it works out well it can create an intense feeling of satisfaction and even be celebrated.
How, you ask? Enjoy a "Suicide Portfolio" contest, that's how.

I say that we target 7 foot Europeans next. I'll bet that they are under-represented here as well.

I'll see if I can get Dirk Nowitzki to join us. He's the first one I thought of.Reub wrote: I say that we target 7 foot Europeans next. I'll bet that they are under-represented here as well.

Another Topic worth resurrecting to get current responses.
After reading all of these, it seems like 85% of the original responders are either gone or only seen here quite infrequently. And, they seemed to be of a much average age than the forum's current participants (even after taking into account that it is about 8 years later since this Topic started).
To answer the question....
68 3/4.....single.....no children......but do have those 19 pets to support...
I could have retired several years ago but I'm still working. And, working way too many hours than I want or need to work (about 40 per week but sometimes can go up to 60 or more, depending upon what I need to get done).
I was born to be an accountant and my personality is binary / black & white and extremely attracted to formulas. The latter plus being extremely logical while having almost zero intuition greatly attracts me to the Permanent Portfolio.
At this point in my investing career with all I've accumulated and, hopefully, in the not near future significantly reducing my hours I desire an investing plan that puts safety first and performance second. From the start the Permanent Portfolio has held much appeal to me.
I came to the forum asking a lot of questions. I went back to all those Topics I'd started with my questions to take notes from the responses I received. As I was coming across various forum participants I started researching in what other Topics those participants had been involved. After a short while, I realized that the questions I had asked had already been asked and answered. Since then I've been spending tons of times reading various Topics and taking notes from those Topics. I also made the decision to also read many Topics that were not specifically giving me Permanent Portfolio information but were just plain interesting to me.
