It also took me a few days to remember Clint Eastwood's "Sudden Impact"!!!

Watched it several times. The first time I saw in the movie with my friend. Towards the end of it when he was coming out of the water at the amusement park, I said to my friend, "I don't want this movie to ever end!"

Finally, who could ever forget one of the all-time movie scenes ever??!!!

True Lies is also a good one.

Though I wouldn’t recommend it to a stranger, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant has got to be one of my favorite movies of all time. Among all vampire films with Salma Hayek, it’s the best one.
And Netflix has it now.
I didn’t realize until today that it was preceded by a book that is now part of a 12-volume series.

Anyone else notice your favorite movies are from before you turned 30 or even earlier? I just don't get as much from them these days.

Loved "They Live"! Saw it several times. All I can remember of it now, though, is Meg Foster's striking green eyes!

However, as someone who generally watches a full Netflix movie a night (plus a partial one from Amazon Prime until I can no longer keep my eyes open).....I am tending to enjoy more the ones I am currently seeing now than many of the ones I've read in this topic.

I am impressed, though, with how many can easily can up with their lists of movies!

Logically that makes sense. 99% of movies were made before I turned 30. And then, more specific to me, most movies made since I turned 30 have been made for children: Harry Potter, comic book characters, and Pixar. The only good movie I've seen past 30 is 1917, which was really good but not as good as the others on my short list.

Absolutely. In general, childhood is magic if you grow up in a fairly non-dysfunctional home. (Eufunctional? functional?) Before youtube and the rest of the internet, it was a big deal to watch Charlie Brown Christmas. Kids’ movies like Cloak & Dagger and the TV special Mazes & Monsters (1982) with a young Tom Hanks were such a big deal to me.

Then you get older, learn there’s no Santa, life sucks and then you die.

Fortunately this is somewhat balanced out by acquired tastes and things that only adults can appreciate.

That must have been the one I walked into on July 1981 at a Chicago Museum? I could have never served on a submarine as I was experiencing high anxiety just walking through it while above ground on a summer day!

A really good submarine movie has to impart a sense of claustrophobia, complete with sweaty palms.

I will add two other movies to my highly recommended list.

If you liked the WWII drama Das Boot, you will probably also enjoy this very realistic and historically accurate depiction of the last days of the Third Reich. The late Bruno Ganz who won much critical acclaim for his portrayal of Hitler later revealed that for years after his wife and kids addressed him as mein fuhrer to tease him.

My personal opinion is that most of what comes out of Hollywood these days is garbage. Even if you can get past all the virtue signalling and other left wing messaging, the writing is still awful. The transition began in the VHS days when we used to rent from Blockbuster. Before that time, most movies were pretty good. Then we noticed more and more that we didn't want to finish watching a higher percentage of rentals with each passing year. That is not to say there aren't a few good films each year, just that the overall quality has been deteriorating.

I noticed this too. I thought it was just my limited attention span and overloaded plate of todos with very little time for active entertainment. But, I still enjoy old movies and haven't had that same level of enjoyment with any of the more recent stuff. Sad.

Are there any relatively new (< 5 years old) movies that ARE worth anything? The last one I saw that I liked was The Hobbit, and even that got a bit annoying toward the end.

Also, most any movie or show with Benedict Cumberbatch in it is worth a look. He brings something to the screen that's long been missing.

Look to television, Soph. The first half of this decade, and beyond, is a golden age of television. Fargo (not the the new season, though); Better Call Saul; lots of good shows.

Also, most any movie or show with Benedict Cumberbatch in it is worth a look. He brings something to the screen that's long been missing.

My wife counts herself among the "Cumberbitches".

1917 has been mentioned here. It's definitely worth a watch. Ford v Ferrari was a fun recent one. Oh, Knives Out was super fun!
