Happy Mother's Day to all - mothers, daughters, sons! Mother's Day was established by Anna Jarvis, with the first official Mother's Day celebrated at St. Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, on May 10, 1908. Go Mountaineers!!!!!!

Happy asparagus season!
Fond memories of the annual "spargelkarte" at the rathskeller in Nuremberg in the 1980s. I had never had white asparagus with bernaise sauce before. The Bavarians washed it down with rauchbier ("smoked beer"), also a local specialty.

Likewise. Nuremberg always had cool stuff going on. I have fond memories and hazy memories of Schlenkerla: The beer that tastes like bacon. One of the biggest things I miss about Germany was how good and cheap the food was.

Some serious sun here in Vancouver the past couple of days. It's a good day to sit back on my porch and reread one of my favourite classics.

Have you guys ever read this one? ;)

YES. Excellent stuff. This is really bringing back a lot of memories as I'm listening to this.

What kind of music are you into?
Good question. My taste in music is pretty random. Depends on my mood and what I'm doing. A few examples off the top of my head...

One of my favorite Nujabes tracks:

Jurassic 5:

There might be a few posts over time... :)

Waltzes...

Did you know the theme to Cold Case is a Waltz?

https://youtu.be/HhBHSvxi25k

(A fun dramatic Waltz, although tune is a little long - 3:21 ish is the optimal length per a book I have. Yes, I have a book on Waltzing. By Richard Powers).

Combining Metal (Metallica), a Finnish Cello Quarter, and Waltzing (also can use for Tango and Fusion) -

https://youtu.be/X-B8k0n_3cs

(The Shakira version is also fun - the drum hitting at at the 2/3 and 5/6 is different fun -- https://youtu.be/P0iOz9xf0zY)

People live here by Rise Against - the lyrics are, un, rather different that what you find in many waltzes. I like the Hydraposition, but don't dance to this one that often (not that I'm dancing much right now).

https://youtu.be/HRqSg2PrJpY

A lot of waltzes with lyrics get a bit mushy, but still good tunes, and great for dancing. (You and Me by Lighthouse probably one of the most popular).

I also play a few waltzes, etc on recorder (in groups that plays at RenFaire and such places).

Heading out now, but other genres later. :)

Rock
Fuel - Shimmer
All That Remains - Greatest Generation
Metal
Pomegranate Tiger - New Breed
Hatebreed - This Is Now
Partner Dance
Glenn Miller - In The Mood
Olly Murs - Dance with Me Tonight

Thanks! John Denver classic. And like that Furr tune. Not currently in a Rock / Metal frame of mind.

Is that you dancing in one of those?

A western that turned into a fusion dance-off.
(I think friends of friends are in it)

I gotta learn West Coast Swing beyond the basics so I can do this -- https://youtu.be/DAR27FWzyZY

Folk music / dance -- Morris dancing (An English tradition, with sticks and bells) -- https://youtu.be/GV5qFUC0Suc

And not dance, but Disturbed doing Sound of Silence is epic.

Today is absolutely a reading day. No typical work of sitting in front of the computer doing coding or hunched over a bunch of math.

Just going to sit in bed and read. I've got the Walter Isaacson biography of Benjamin Franklin along with a steaming cup of coffee. Lily is on my lap and I can hear rain outside. life is good!

Nice. For me, it’s ‘The World Without Us’ by Alan Weisman.
2007, but very post-pandemic.

I'd love to give a full a report as it was quite the adventure. Maybe tomorrow.

For me, over the last few weeks I'd been either reading a book a day or taking two days to read the book.

But this one is not going that fast:

Learning from the Germans: Race and the Memory of Evil
https://smile.amazon.com/Learning-from- ... l_huc_item

An A+ book.

I'm learning so much from it. It's one of those books that while I'm reading it I tell myself that as soon as you finish reading it you need to immediately reread it to catch all the things you missed the first time around.

Here is a question for everyone. Immigrants have to pass a 100 question multiple choice test to gain U.S. citizenship. All but one question have only one correct answer. This one has three acceptable answers! What is that question?

I can give hints or answer Yes or No questions.

From the book, I wanted to share Franklin's Virtues that he wrote down and aimed to live his life by.

  • Temperance. Eat not to dullness; drink not to elevation.
  • Silence. Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation.
  • Order. Let all your things have their places; let each part of your business have its time.
  • Resolution. Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve.
  • Frugality. Make no expense but to do good to others or yourself; i.e., waste nothing.
  • Industry. Lose no time; be always employ'd in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions.
  • Sincerity. Use no hurtful deceit; think innocently and justly, and, if you speak, speak accordingly.
  • Justice. Wrong none by doing injuries, or omitting the benefits that are your duty.
  • Moderation. Avoid extremes; forbear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve.
  • Cleanliness. Tolerate no uncleanliness in body, cloaths, or habitation.
  • Tranquillity. Be not disturbed at trifles, or at accidents common or unavoidable.
  • Chastity. Rarely use venery but for health or offspring, never to dullness, weakness, or the injury of your own or another's peace or reputation.
  • Humility. Imitate Jesus and Socrates.

He, by his own admission, did not always succeed in living up to his own aspirations.

My "background movie" that I have on while working lately has consistently been The Two Towers from The Lord of the Rings series.

The Helm's Deep battle scene is incomparably epic!

Dualstow's recent avatar motivated me to watch Gladiator again tonight.

Holy shit I forgot how awesome this movie is. I just got to the part where Commodus discovers that the unnamed gladiator is actually Maximus. Such a great scene.

Franklin, in addition to being an incorrigible womanizer and glorious hedonist, also had some good things to say about productivity that may be apropos to the productivity thread you started. I've always liked this outline, and generally have tried to hang any productivity system on its framework. You just need to add Tech's passion for the project and Franklin's debauchery and you have a perfect system.
