I think their experience is that discussions about social security soon turn into full blown fisticuffs. Same with discussions on monetary policy, etc. So they will simply stop those discussions immediately regardless of who is starting them. Again, some prominent posters there have been put in the penalty box from time to time.

They have a tough job. I like that forum and it is one of two investing forums I read (and this one of course). They have a lot of good posters there and very high quality information.

i can see both sides of this having at one time been on both sides, as a disgruntled poster on a forum (not BH) and as a moderator,
it is tough to see a community you like and enjoy being "ruined" by unfair and petty implementation of rules or by rules you don't agree with. On the other hand moderating is as Craig describes, a time consuming and thankless job. i also tend to agree that the rules they have there are necessary for their forum and the personality's of the posters there.

watching the tiny and meaningless power of a moderator being abused in petty ways is surprisingly aggravating, and unless you are willing to start a revolution (a difficult and petty solution to the problem of petty abuses) the best way to influence the situation is with polite and carefully worded and well documented PM's to the forum staff. most moderators are not at their core the insufferable jerks their errors in moderation judgment might make them seem to be... make your case document the inconsistency's and send it to the staff, if you are doing it as somebody who wants to help the community and improve the forum through developing a personal relationship with those involved then you should be able to have influence, coming off a combative or angry will create resistance and get a defensive response from the egos of those being confronted..

i personally don't spend much time at BH, the investment esoterica is not my thing and i enjoy political,  philosophical, economic (and nutrition) discussions to much,  i quickly grew tired of seeing threads i thought were getting good and taking off locked. i don't argue there right to lock them just i looked elsewhere..... and here i am...

We spend time in a world  and a country and a state and a city we don't always like, but that doesn't mean we throw out the baby with the bathwater.
I also don't understand why you'd bother to complain about it here.
Short answer: because we can't complain about it there.
Longer answer: because it's relevant that at Bogleheads, I got grief from moderator LadyGeek for mentioning in my sig that the price of milk and gas have skyrocked while the minimum wage stays the same; and at gyroscopic, moderator Tex will let me post the same info or put it in my sig as long as I am respectful of other posters.
To me, it's like going to First United Methodist Church and complaining about how they do things at St. Luke's.
I wouldn't find that unseemly or strange, as long as the UMC are allowing something that St Luke's are not.

+1

The great thing about voluntary institutions is that, if you don't like how they operate, you're free to ignore them.

Monetary Realism.

See www.monetaryrealism.com for more info. There's countless debates on this board as well.
