I don't know any horse people, but I like the look of some of those daypacks at Filson, like the Ranger backpack and the "small pack", the latter of which is a bit bigger than my trusty carry-on. (Skytrain bag from RedOxx).

As far as underwear and socks go, I've been wearing two pairs recently and it's been working out well. Icebreaker briefs and Smartwool low cut socks, both made out of wool. Wear one pair, then wash it with you in the shower. Hang them up to dry, and they're dry when you want to wear them next (wool dries quickly).

Agreed! That works for most occasions.
