I don't *love* Five Guys burgers, but I do love their fries. They use peanut oil.

Not all that into red meat anymore but once in a while I have my moments of weakness. My favorite local burger joint is Foster Freeze which also does ice cream and such. Sometimes there's just nothing better than a bacon double everything burger with fries and a nice thick milkshake.

Concur with goodasgold. Soda is just liquid diabetes. I don't think I have had one is six months and If I have had two in the last year I'd be surprised.

P.S. With Lent approaching fast and Meatfare just two weeks off, I am thinking a burger is on the menu for sometime this week.

Thank you for that, Tenn. It was a classic, and I've gotten a lot of mileage out of it.

I tried Foster's Freeze today.  I found it to be nothing special.  It's just a less greasy and a bit tastier version of Jack in the Box without making you sick.  Very thin burger patties, obviously fried and not grilled.  They screwed up the order too, giving me crinkle steak fries when I wanted straight and charging for the wrong size drink.  And the prices were ridiculous too, $3.49 for a double plus .50 each for the two slices of cheese!  For that much money I can patronize a place more deserving of it.

Now they obviously have their pride and joy in the wide array of soft serve concoctions, so I'll probably try something of that when I'm next in the mood.  And they season the fries with something, so thats at least a bit more than the boring plain Jane.

this wont quite qualify because its not a chain but willies burger (Sacramento) which is a spin off of Tommy's (in LA) makes a great chilli cheese burger and chilli cheese fries, (and so does Tommy's from what i have heard.)

I was in the mood for chili cheese fries today but Foster's Freeze doesn't offer shoestrings only crinkle cut, Jack in the Box doesn't offer it at all and now Carl's Jr no longer sells chili cheese fries (which uses fake soy-infused chili, not my first choice).  And that's despite the fight scene with the bitch in charge over a small fry that wasn't even half full (!!!) and had been sitting out for awhile after being specifically told to fill it up...  I expect $1.89 worth of french fries like it shows in the pictures.  I also tried the all natural burger and got one free with a coupon.  Yuck and I'm not even eating the free one.  That's the final straw for me.  It's worth going further from here on out to go to The Habit or Five Guys.  These sleazy corporations can go fuck themselves which is exactly what is happening.

The best burgers in the world are a regional family-run chain in NW Indiana / South Chicago called SCHOOP'S. If you are traveling through the area, do treat yourself. You will not regret it. They burgers are absolutely memorable.

Had a Smashburger Classic Smash (no tomato) yesterday in the DC airport. Was pretty tasty actually, except it was a bit too salty.

I somehow missed this thread originally, but I second the vote for Culver's.  I'd put it up there on my list with In-n-Out and Five Guys.

Also, looks like the Consumer Reports rank is more in line with my experience.

I wasn't enamored with the Smashburger burger, but their herb fries were really good.

There's been a lot of stakeholder activism for change at McDonald's lately.  A new CEO starts next week.  Among the possible list of changes stakeholders are looking at, none of it involves fixing the food, but retarted things like reducing the menu or remodeling the stores or selling off real estate.  They just don't get it, highly likely because none of these rich Wall Street Ivy League Country Club stakeholders even eat at McDonald's.   We may be witnessing another crash and burn due to elitist hubris.

I fairly regularly go the McD to get a spicy chicken sandwich for $1, and a large Iced Coffee for $2. And the newer McD restaurants look pretty nice too. When I still was in Houston, McD used to be my backup place if my internet went down. And when we were selling our house I'd go there during showings. There always was a group of retirees hanging out around 11am :-)

i had a McDonald's cheese burger for the first time in a long while, i remember them being a large slider style burger, smallish but tasty, it took two for a meal, with a surprisingly well orchestrated ratio of burger to pickle to cheese to mustard ect..

now that perfect mix is gone.. the bun seems thicker and the burger was near paper thin.. not the experience i remember from five or so years ago.. it was mostly a mouthful of sugary bun and condiments with every bite..

And not only did I pick up 7lbs of Polly-O whole milk mozzarella that is famous on the East coast, but also 10lbs of frozen Angus beef hamburgers (3 to a pound) and 25lbs of frozen shoestring french fries -- FOR FOOD SERVICE USE ONLY, hah!  The burgers are delicious, but I'm still trying to get the frying situation working with the fries.  I'm on my second fryer so far and am using a mixture of palm and coconut oils.  So far I've had zero desire to ever frequent a fast food place again.

Highly recommended you check RD out.  Register a (dormant) shell business so you can get a reseller's permit, if necessary.

Two thumbs up to the huge can of beanless MSG-free chili and MSG-free bratwurst dogs also!  Why, I haven't tasted food this good in ages.  I'm convinced retail gets the worst crap, all prettied up by marketing fiction.

It sounds like it could be a nifty alternative to Costco.  I've been thinking of not renewing as Amazon is shaping up to be a very nice alternative service as part of Amazon Prime, without the additional $50/year.
