The point is, intolerance of intolerance is a tautology. It's a great illustration of MT's point how people who consider themselves open-minded and tolerant can have huge blind spots. You don't have to be intolerant to be disapproving, or to do what you have to do.

That was the point - difference between my response to someones beliefs vs them making me adhere to beliefs.

Someone believe the earth is flat - one response (may discuss, may just shake my head and move on)
They want to pass a law making globes illegal - no

And maybe intolerant is too strong, but the first definition "1 : unable or unwilling to endure", which iimplies more active disagreement than "disapprove".

OP – What a great post. I did not even realize that I looking at the avatar and running it through my own past experiances and what the picture meant to me.

I'm happiest when I approach those with different ideas like an anthropologist.

I really want to understand the rationale for other people's beliefs.  I want to understand the mental processes that led them to assemble and interpret reality in the ways that they do.

I don't want to distract them with my own beliefs unless they ask me to explain them and I think that they really want to hear what I have to say.

I don't want to make people feel uncomfortable while talking with me.  It's not that I fear challenging them, it's just that I know once most people feel threatened their thought processes turn more reptilian and this state of mind seems to generate very little in the way of new insights.

Speaking of assumptions, PointedStick, I've always assumed that your name comes from the old Monty Python sketch about the self-defense class.  Does it?

Thanks for the  link, dualstow.  I'm on a Mac, so this is a great site.  I liked the Tardis, but the Daleks are my favorite evil robots--which reminds me of that other topic we're doing on this forum about a world full of robots.
