Don't be so melodramatic.  Inflicting coercion on more people, rather than less, in the name of "fairness" is never a truly fair outcome to "society".  History is replete with many examples.

MG,

As a quasi-Austriolibertarian, you may want to be careful accusing others of melodrama.  Only the far victimology left can make living in such a modern, free, prosperous country sound so g-d tyrannical and brutal.

As George Carlin once said: Have you ever noticed that their words are Newspeak and your Newspeak is words?

I'm with you on this one. We all redefine words to mean what we want them to mean, and become shocked, shocked! to find other people who think they mean something else!

2. The reason why sales taxes exist is to make merchants compensate the state government for the use of its services that are not otherwise paid for with user fees (such as electricity and roads). If, for example, a merchant in Ohio doesn't use the services in the state of Florida, why should a Floridian making the purchase be compelled to pay Florida sale staxes? Perhaps from this perspective it would be more fair for the Florida purchaser to in fact pay sales taxes to Ohio, but that creates the unfairness of taxation without representation.
How is that any different than the taxes you pay on purchases while visiting another state on vacation?
It isn't. Let's repeal that, too. As I've said before, I think the fairest thing of all is no taxes on anyone.

I could be wrong but I think they quit doing that.
