I had a remote meeting at work this morning, and my boss (an Egyptian, not an American citizen) broached the subject of the election. Everyone, including the only other white American guy (all the other team members are foreigners), proceeded to trash-talk Trump and complain that he's "trying to end democracy in the U.S." I wisely kept my lips tightly zipped, because I'm not keen on being ostracized, bullied, or having a target drawn on my back.
When they asked me why I wasn't saying much, I deflected with, "Election? Huh, what election?" Everyone laughed. And I lived to see another day.
A couple of them have even told me in detail how corrupt things are back in their home countries. It’s why they’re living and working in the U.S.

Wow, shades of McCarthyism. Are the Dems going to require everyone who voted for or worked for Trump to sign loyalty oaths?
So much for being against divisiveness, indeed. They were only against it when they could use their complaints as a stick to beat Trump with. Now that Biden gets into office it's full speed ahead on the divisiveness front. But did you expect anything different?
Thank all the gods for the Supreme Court being how it is, and fingers crossed for Republican control of the Senate....

Just like there are radicals on the right, there are radicals on the left, don’t paint us all the same.
I believe you Trump supporters to all be good people. Just tired of Trump himself.
Hopefully we can all move a bit more to the middle.

If Trump had dictatorial aspirations, he could have easily taken more authoritarian control over the nation during the Covid-1984 hysteria like so many Dem governors did. But he didn’t.doodle wrote: ↑Sat Nov 07, 2020 7:53 amThey can probably recognize a corrupt dictator when they see one...unlike half of this country.Tortoise wrote: ↑Fri Nov 06, 2020 11:19 pm Most of my teammates are from corrupt Middle Eastern countries that can’t even provide sewer service and running water to a lot of their citizens. I was briefly in Mexico one afternoon, Canada a few times. All over the United States with the warmth of Florida being my favorite destination. But I think we are coming up on the four year anniversary of the last time I did not sleep in my own bed.
Every morning 13 animals look forward / are relying upon me to feed them. 3 of them (the cats) expect to be constantly fed throughout the day! In addition to being a Provincial, I'm quite content with being a big-time homebody.

Agree. Trump supporters need to be heard. If the President Elect is sincere that he will the President of all Americans, I'd like to see him work to earn the support of the people who voted for Trump. Listening to them is a start. Common ground should be the goal.Cortopassi wrote: ↑Sat Nov 07, 2020 12:21 pm Just like there are radicals on the right, there are radicals on the left, don’t paint us all the same.

Re: The Party of Love is just getting started...
Vinny,
You probably already know this, but the place where your mother's family comes from should be on the short list of candidates for Paradise on Earth. Absolutely breathtaking. They have lemon trees everywhere along that coast, including the islands of Capri and Ischia. They are a unique variety to the area called the Sorrento lemon. At the right time of year, the air is just perfumed with lemon blossom for hundreds of miles.
And if that isn't enough there's Limone Gelata and a shot or three of Limoncello to punctuate a nice long dinner and evening of La Dolce Vita.
If you have distant family there, do yourself a favor brother and go see them. On the way, stop in Naples for authentic Pizza Napoletana and everything we're busy bickering about in this country will just evaporate.
Re: The Party of Love is just getting started...
Actually never knew any of that detail until you just told me! Had no idea that was where my mother's side of the family came from until a few years ago when I asked a cousin. My mother never talked about her Italian heritage.glennds wrote: ↑Sat Nov 07, 2020 5:45 pmVinny,

My father came to this country at the age of 13. Probably 1927. This country imposed severe immigration restrictions in the early 1920s (that stayed until 1965). I have no idea why they let in my father's poor family who had no family in this country.
I once asked him if he wanted to go back to Italy. I was surprised by his response. He was quite bitter towards Italy. He said he was poor and if he'd stayed there he would have remained poor. Would not have had the opportunity he had in this country. I immediately understand he was an example of "The American Dream". Came here at 13, knew no English, which meant he did not graduate until the age of 21 due to the language difficulties. But as I knew him he had no accent and wrote better than many college students. Ended up with a job with the local electric company that, with overtime, paid probably the equivalent of $80,000 now.
My sister and I were brought up in an American household with ZERO Italian influence. My mother and father only spoke Italian when they did not want us to know what they were saying. When my sister and I each had to choose a language in school there was no pressure to choose Italian. We each chose French.
At one point, long ago, the two countries I most wanted to visit was Japan and Russia as I thought they would be quite unlike this country. Italy was never a thought.
As I reread what you wrote it seems like the island of Ischia was where my cousin told us our mutual side of the family came from (Amalfitano).
