Thanks for doing that, Xan!
Vinny et al.: I'm also an introvert, and "thinking on my feet" has always been a distinct weakness of mine. It can sometimes make meetings and phone calls a bit frustrating.
I'm much better suited for asynchronous communication like email where I can be more deliberate and conscientious and not have to worry about making mistakes and omissions while trying to think on my feet.
That Amazon approach sounds like it's probably based on some solid psychology. It's been said that articulate writing and speech is an outward expression of clear thought, so the exercise of having to condense one's thoughts into an articulate piece of writing or speech actually forces one to clarify one's thoughts.

And, from this part of the choir, ALL you say gets a hearty, "Amen!!".Tortoise wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 8:50 pm Thanks for doing that, Xan!

Sorry, folks, I didn't make any changes... I think you're noticing that Vinny rescaled his picture to make it smaller.
Re: Isn't there an Avatar Thread?
Wow, I'm really loving this last page-worth of replies. I think we're all from the same mold (on one aspect of our personalities, at least).
Re: Isn't there an Avatar Thread?
I'll now create a poll to confirm...

Re: Isn't there an Avatar Thread?
I did a test post with a tall skinny avatar. Full image height and a few pixels wide. Horrible.
Sorry about that folks. I deleted the test post as it destroyed the readability of the forum.
Carry on.

Fantastic new avatar, Mark. Working on your son’s treasure map, I see.

Mark's avatar makes me want to play the Uncharted series again.

Re: Isn't there an Avatar Thread?
OK, I finally got around to uploading an avatar. I was going to put up a photo of a cocktail but couldn't find a good one I've already taken, so maybe I'll take a new one this evening. So then I did a search in my Google Photos library for "cat" and found this one that I found online quite a while back (it's not one of my cats, but I did add the text myself).

Dualstow, is that Frank Costanza castigating Steinbrenner about trading Jay Buhner?

Re: Isn't there an Avatar Thread?
I’m not sure which scene it is, but i just wanted to pay tribute to the late Frank Costanza, aka Jerry Stiller. R.I.P.
Let’s just pretend he’s castigating George for not having any gold in his portfolio.
I think Larry David was the voice of Steinbrenner back then. I didn’t know it back when Seinfeld was still airing new episodes.

As someone who has a business degree and worked in finance for a couple of years, and who now pursues computer science, I feel like I'm really "living" my avatar!
Re: Isn't there an Avatar Thread?
That trade was defensible. Trades can only be criticized at the time, under the circumstances in which they made. Not with the benefit of hindsight after you know what actually subsequently occurred.

Re: Isn't there an Avatar Thread?
Found the scene. For some reason Steinbrenner thinks George has died and he's telling George's parents:

Nice picture, Mountaineer. Timely!

Re: Isn't there an Avatar Thread?
Not evident what this is in response to. Scrolled all the way back to April 18th but not seeing anything by Mountaineer.

Re: Isn't there an Avatar Thread?
This is the avatar thread. He's talking about Mountaineer's avatar. (A picture of the Falcon 9.)
Re: Isn't there an Avatar Thread?
Missed that...was just reading the message. I'll have to note it next time I see something from Mountaineer (provided he does not change it again prior to then. He seemed to have the same one for a long time....now they seem to change frequently?).

Yes indeed. It’s the recent launch of the X-37B. Adds a nice double entendres virtual background to my Zoom meetings too.

Re: Isn't there an Avatar Thread?
If this worked, my avatar is the Avatar. (The last Airbender).
Watched it long ago with my kids. Now on Netflix.
I really enjoyed that show.

What a happy, relaxed kitty! But this won't make sense as soon as you change your picture to something else!
