It wasn't anything important. Not at all. Just kind of fun.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
I love that Lex just interviewed Graham Hancock. It's probably all bullsh_t but I ate those books up in the 90s when I was living overseas. Especially 'Fingerprints of the Gods.' So much fun.

I'm on the one where the person is talking about the Maya's. Is that him?

Mayans? Almost certainly. You … can’t see his name?

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
I did many times but never paid any attention to it. Mainly focused on the title, which did not seem like it'd be of much interest to me. But there were a lot of portions of it that were interesting. Still have about 20 minutes to go.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
Oh, the one I saw had his name as the title. Released yesterday, I think.

We are referring to two different ones I have to first finish this one and then two more before I get to that one.
This is the one I am on:
Ed Barnhart: Maya, Aztec, Inca, and Lost Civilizations of South America | Lex Fridman Podcast #446

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
I persisted in listening to this entire one even though it was BY FAR the least amount I understood of any Lex interview.

Listening to this now:
Jordan Peterson: Nietzsche, Hitler, God, Psychopathy, Suffering & Meaning | Lex Fridman Podcast #448
I observed one major thing regarding Peterson in a previous interview with Lex and which this one reinforces.
He is a SUPREME egotist. He does almost all the talking, lecturing. Rarely lets Lex speak.
This is the opposite from many of Lex's other interviewees, who are as accomplished if not more than Peterson but who are far more humble than Peterson.
There is a back-and-forth between them and Lex. Lex has to use all his skills to get any words in when interviewing Peterson.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
I almost always have the opposite problem with interviews, Vinny. The interviewer is there to try to maximize the amount of useful information we get out of the interviewee. If the interviewee is going along on his own, great! Way too often, the interviewer will inject himself, interrupt, etc, generally making the interview about himself, which is just the worst.
Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
Have you listened to Lex? Lex is a master interviewer, getting the most out of the interviewee. Peterson was not engaging in discussion, he was lecturing.Xan wrote: ↑Thu Oct 17, 2024 3:15 pm I almost always have the opposite problem with interviews, Vinny. If you are into AI .. listen to the discussion he had with the four AI people.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
Lex is humble and doesn’t make the interview about himself, but sometimes it’s painful to wait for him to slowly get a question out.
The episode with Steve Keen on Marx was particularly grueling, although half the blame goes to Keen himself. He’s really smart, but doesn’t know how to present things. He should have started dumbing it down as soon as Lex stuttered out questions like “what’s money again?”
Instead of defining economic and financial terms as he went, Keen would point out that he was drawing information from p276 of Marx’s book. Thanks, man.
I think he’s a better scholar/student than teacher.

BS artists confuse with complexity and jargon. got that vibe from Keen. Havent listened to enough Feynman but supposedly his thing was making the abstract concrete.

And what to present: one of my favorite things that he wrote was that his father taught him all about birds. A classmate or acquaintance was ridiculing him because he didn’t know some bird’s name, but he knew everything else about the bird.
Made me realize I’ve had a lifelong habit of stupidly learning the terms for things and thinking I’m actually learning something.

Not bombing Nasrallah’s treasure (it’s under a hospital), but telling the Lebanese populace (and the world) how to get to the cash and gold is possibly even better than the pager operation. It’s also hilarious.

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
I'm back after years on Reddit, I got arbitrarily banned by a robot because of who knows what words, and people can be extreme a$$hats over there, so I deleted my account and the app. It was just exhausting. I was a huge contributor to r/FidelityInvestments. They are kind of having bad issues. I'll document those elsewhere.
I really got tired of the S&P500 maximalists who would come after me if I suggested "maybe diversify?". To me, everyone all-in to US large cap market capitalization funds is a kind of bad sentiment indicator. Or maybe S&P500 goes up to 7500. Who knows.

I haven’t been banned, but I also quit Reddit in frustration more than once and am currently just a reader.
Very curious to know whatever you know about Fidelity.
I also think of you sometimes as gold climbs. Wish I had matched your purchases.

I'm very happy with gold, not so much with the miners. Should miners ever catch up with gold, I will sell them.I haven’t been banned, but I also quit Reddit in frustration more than once and am currently just a reader.

My next investment tip is - I absolutely have no clue.
Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
From the little I've been in Reddit it seems substantive responses are few and far between? Most of them are like texts, about three or four words? Not where I want to spend any time.

My mom visited me this week! It was really a great time as I took her to West Edmonton Mall (the largest mall in Canada), my favourite restaurants, and some awesome theatre.Hal wrote: ↑Sat Oct 26, 2024 5:29 pmHi Smithy,

It's a good thing she got here early enough to avoid the snow.
