New Massachusetts rules went into effect last Friday.

Last night was our first softball game after. We had been required to wear masks. Last night no one was wearing one.

After the game I went to Subway and they'd taken down their mask requirement notice. Same as when I went to the bank earlier in the day.

That sounds like a drag, jalanlong. Here in (60%) liberal CT one can see significant lifting of restrictions pretty much every day now. Any kind of statewide mask regulations went away on 5/19. Gym is about 80% unmasked now. I mean, officially, people who are not fully vaccinated are still asked to wear them, but, in practice, it's only those who still want to. Restaurants for the most part are at full capacity with wait staff also losing the masks. A lot of people seem to still wear them at Walmart but that's their own choice.

I think the oddest thing to me is that it seems to be mostly young people wearing them. There's still a lot of goofiness going on in a lot of places. At a Mexican place in Brooklyn two night ago, they asked us to take our temperatures and then proceeded to completely ignore the readings (my wife clocked in at a decidedly chilly 89.7! "And please put your wrist in the general vicinity of this little thingy so that it can spit out random numbers").

But overall I think it's a good thing that a lot of these decisions are made on a state-by-state basis. It allows slower states like CT to see the impacts of lifting restrictions and, one would hope, adjust accordingly. Here in the New England states many people were traumatized last year when NYC was absolutely getting devastated. In places where masks are still de rigueuer, people generally are heard mumbling that they are fed up with them and just following "local health guidelines". In the last four days I've seen this at an elementary school up in MA and at an endoscopy facility this morning here in CT. But deaths, hospitalizations, etc. are coming coming down so convincingly that this won't last much longer.

In other news, based on the recent FOIA dump it would appear that Fauci is going down fast. But it's probably just as likely he'll be promoted.

to borrow from tomfoolery .. he should get a raise as well... and if he gets thrown under the bus and blamed for the whole covid mess from funding to lock-down he should be canonized as a saint, and revered as a martyr...

More on Massachusetts....

Last night I went to hear live music at MGM Springfield. It was my first live music experience since February 2020 and first outdoor live music experience since October 2019.

As you can see by the pictures......NO mask wearing (it was a week ago today that restrictions were lifted). The only person I saw wearing a mask was this young looking woman. You can barely see her and the mask in second picture (she is wearing a white hat & sandals & short pants, is just to the right middle in the picture, and has a woman with black hair to her right). Most of the crowd was 50+. Many of it 70+ (to fit the age range of the band members).

This morning I went to Stop & Shop. The sign used to say you had to wear a mask. Today it was encouraging you to wear one. I did not wear one. Most employees were but some employees were not. For customers it was maybe 1/3 not and 2/3 wearing? Just a wild guess as I was not consciously trying to assess the breakdown.

I just went to the tampa zoo with the family.

3 weeks ago maybe 10% were masked. Today maybe 2% and at that low rate they looked downright bizarre. They looked almost as weird as masked people would have looked pre ummm....pandemic

Here in a reddish part of Illinois, most people in stores or entering restaurants are still masking even though most establishments have dropped the requirement. This Friday the state will be fully open except for masking in health care settings and schools (boo), so I'll be interested to see if people change or not. I don't know if these people are scared of covid, or of social backlash. Because as I mentioned here, the first time I went in the store without the mask, I had some apprehension about the latter.

Just got back from two weeks travelling through Colorado and Utah visiting kids and grandkids. Almost all businesses had signs stating that masks were not required if you were vaccinated. Saw very few people inside stores wearing masks and outside even fewer - less than 1 in a hundred or maybe even a thousand by my best estimate.

As expected, anything associated with government at any level was another story. After one TSA agent told me to take it off so she could verify that my face matched my ID, another quickly told me to put it back on when I forgot. And then there was the airline itself which reminded us to only remove it between bites of food or drink. With a 4 hour flight you still have about 8 hours altogether to constantly wear a mask and I don't think I'll be travelling any farther until that changes.

One thing I did observe during those 8 non-stop hours of mask wearing was how much the vapor from my nose fogged up my glasses. If I was somewhere cold enough I could even see the vapor rising with every breath I exhaled. Which only furthered my belief that mask wearing, as Rand Paul put it, is nothing but political theater.

I will say that there is a bit of confirmation bias in looking at crowds at a concert or ballgame and pointing out that they are not wearing masks. I feel like most people who would attend something with a large crowd right now are probably people who are not overly concerned with Covid.

The people I know here who are still very cautious about Covid are nowhere near the point of going to a concert, movie or even a vacation. Most are just beginning to dip their toes into going to a restaurant for the first time in 16 months.

Good point. Myself, I feel like my life is back to normal. When I have to wear a mask to see my doctor, I feel somewhat aggravated.

Damn J, look at you thinking. Well done sir! I think you have a good point. Them that embrace the mask are much less likely to be in public anyway. I wonder if that was always the case for these people and they're just less social to begin with.

I can tell you the hormones during my wife's pregnancy last year caused her face to breakout and she found it a relief to wear a mask in public rather than deal with makeup.

She's pregnant again and same issue.

She wore a mask in church last week but told me when we left the house she planned to wear one just so she didn't have to put makeup on. She didn't want me thinking she actually believed in any of it.

Ah ha thank you! Regarding #3 i gave her a choice...deliver unto me a boy to carry forth my name and the planting of my seed in her fertile soil shall henceforth cease. Deliver unto me a second daughter and planting season will begin anew come next spring.

Honestly we just hope for good health. We spent 84 days in the NICU last year. None of us would survive that again.

Congratulations! 84 days in the NICU is heartbreaking. So sorry. My daughter was an NICU nurse for several years. It takes a special person to do that and we are so blessed to have every one of them. I sincerely hope you don’t have to go through that again.

We have more cases than that almost anywhere in the US, and most states are either completely open or open enough that it doesn't matter. Your leaders are insane. I hope they understand that this virus is going to be present for a long time. So if they open up and get a few dozen cases, back into lockdown???

Have you all heard that Anthony Fauci's wife also works for the NIH?

From the Wikipedia ....
Christine Grady is an American nurse and bioethicist who serves as the head of the Department of Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center.[1]
She was a Commissioner on the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues from 2010 and 2017.[1]

That's my guess. Wait for next November/December when it is virtually guaranteed to happen. So don't throw those masks away just yet.

That Fauci family must have an odd definition of ethics.
Still waiting to see what becomes of the "gain of function" thing that Fauci was apparently interested in pursuing if reports are to be believed.

If Mrs. Fauci was the head of bioethics at NIH and this really happened at the Wuhan lab at U.S. taxpayer expense, as some claim, it seems to me that she ought to testify under oath about what she knew and when she knew it.

And no offense to nurses as I know many and have nothing but respect for them but how does a nurse get such an exalted position of "chief of bioethics" at the NIH?

So if WiseOne is correct and cases spike this winter, what is everyone's opinion on our response? Given that vaccinations will have been available for almost a year at that point, life returning to normal and also people seeing the aftermath of supply chain disruptions, labor shortages etc, does the public have the appetite to go back to lockdowns, masks and distancing rules again? Or will the media even report on the spike in cases? Will we even be doing the constant testing and reporting of "cases" any longer? Any guesses?

All i know for sure is "we have to do something". Millions of Americans have been jabbed. The jabs will not be stopping for them. I believe our future is lots more pandemics, maybe annually with all kinds of new freedoms forced on us.
