What happened today?

Today was a rare day when all 4 sectors of the HB PP showed slight gains.

But PRPFX was down 1.2 %

Anybody know why?

Whatever it is, it is causing me dislike this fund more and more.

The nearly 60% drop in 2008?  PRPFX by itself is no PP.  It is too overweighted to commodities.  I used to own it in 2006-2007 and sold it for bonds before we went into the recession.

It dropped from like 38 to 29 in 2008 (briefly).  Definitely not 60%.

Maybe not 60%, but doesn't the chart show that it dropped from 110% to 60%?  That's a 50% loss, still pretty severe!

Thanks for the explanation. Sounds like taxable income and if so, an unexpected Christmas gift.

Yes that chart from Yahoo does give the illusion that at one time it was at 115% and later fell down to 60% making you somewhat deduce that it lost -55%, BUT the chart starts from a PRPFX price of around 18 and the 115% up implies that the price had risen 2.15 times (gain factor) to 2.15 x 18 = 38.7

Later it was only up 60% from that 18 start value = 1.6 gain factor x 18 = 28.8

The drawdown was therefore closer to something like $28.8 / $38.7 = 0.744 factor or around -25%

I've not used precise figures here, but they're close enough i.e. the actual MaxDD was -27.16%

To say the same thing a little differently...

Note that the starting y-axis value is 0%...  The chart is a plot of return on investment, not value.  So when return goes from 110% to 60%, value has gone from 210% to 160%, which is a drawdown of 24%. 

I have just realized with the cold certainty of a man staring into the abyss... that I am never ever going to get a Nobel Prize for Mathematics.

There is no Nobel Prize for mathematics. Nobel's wife ran off with a mathematician so he expressly excluded maths .
