Coldplay.  Their music is rock, but it incorporates beautiful piano solos, strings, vocal harmonies, and amazing instrumentals.  Personally, I think they are one of the few popular bands that is still producing "real" music out there.  They don't edit out every flaw.  On an acoustic song, you hear their fingers moving across the frets of a steel string guitar.  That fret noise could easily be edited out in the studio, but they leave it in as a part of the human process of actually making the music.  When most pop musicians nowadays use autotune and edit out every flaw, their music is amazingly human and real.

If you haven't had a chance to listen to their new album, Mylo Xyloto, definitely give it a chance.  In the first 3 or 4 songs you will be in musical heaven.

Sticking to fairly recent stuff:

1. Ben Folds Five.  Mostly because Ben Folds is such great songwriter/arranger.

2. Five for Fighting is also great.  Check out their Live Session on iTunes.

3. Wilco. You gotta listen to the tunes a few times, but then they're great.

More later...I'm late for something.

Curious to hear what people have to say.  I'm betting someone recommends a group I've never heard of that turns out to be great...similar to the TV thread that introduced me to Breaking Bad.

my bias towards bands from my teen years probably shows my age, but i think the musical talent hold's up well....

Love them. One of my favorite albums is 'The Nightfly'. A friend said, "if you like Fagen, you have to listen to Steely Dan!". I did and for sure I loved it. One of my latest purchases: Two Against Nature 96kHz/24bit. Wonderful!

Some of my other favorites. Guess when I came of age music-wise...
  • Donald Fagen
  • Talking Heads
  • Joe Jackson
  • Depeche Mode
  • The Cure
  • The Clash
  • The Police
  • The Stranglers
  • Heaven 17
  • Roxy Music
  • Doe Maar

Get crazy with the cheese whiz!

Hehe... Seriously I love all those 80s bands that jmourik likes.  I guess I will always have a soft spot for bands that were popular when I was young.

Some good choices in here so far!  A couple more to add IMO:
  • The Killers - This band's got a great sound and an ultra-talented frontman in Brandon Flowers.  Fantastic mix of alternative rock and a sort of 80s-style Brit pop.
  • U2 - A huge catalog of great music, including "The Joshua Tree", perhaps my all-time favorite rock album.  The Edge rings his guitar like a bell.

LW,

I've always had very mixed feelings on U2, but I play guitar, and while I'd never attempt his style, you can't help but be impressed with how unique his sound is.

John Hiatt and the Goners.

If anyone likes Jazz, Brad Mehldau is great and picks a lot of cool songs.

His trio does Paranoid Android, by Radiohead, for example, and also some good Beatles covers (Blackbird).

Barry Manilow.......Just Kidding.  ;D

The Ramones. Saw them in concert on Lido Beach Long Island NY back in 1984.  Grew up in the punk rock-new wave period. It was the most memorable concert and the stage diving was awesome back then.
