Do you plug the ethernet cord right into your computer, or are you on a wifi router?
You there, Ephialtes. May you live forever.

All the computers are on wifi. All the set-top boxes are cabled.Kriegsspiel wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 5:42 pm Do you plug the ethernet cord right into your computer, or are you on a wifi router?

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
Well, that would explain the computers, since wifi speeds can vary, but wired speeds should be as advertised. What do you mean by set-top boxes? TV?

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
Yeah. It could very well be attenuated wifi connectivity causing slow upload speeds, but I personally doubt it. Every connection I've ever had since as long as I can remember has always had a large upload to download disparity. Either way, I'm a bit too lazy to go and check with a cable lol.Kriegsspiel wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 5:51 pm Well, that would explain the computers, since wifi speeds can vary, but wired speeds should be as advertised. Can a weak wifi signal actually cause upload speeds to be compromised while download speeds don't get affected at all?
Set-top boxes are all TV yeah. They're all wired so as to ensure my folks get maximum bandwidth possible for watching... whatever old people TV they watch hehe.

Looked like I used the same one as you. Do not know if I trust the results.Smith1776 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 3:25 pmI used to use a dedicated website but it looks like Google now has it as a feature!
Just google "internet speed test" or something along those lines and it should show up.

I bought a George Foreman grill to throw in the back of the car a few weeks ago.
It has greatly improved my dinnertime time when I don't want to put up with any of the local dining restrictions.
Walmart pre-seasoned fajita meat tonight. Nom nom.

When I was dirtbagging around, I had a little Primus camp stove that worked pretty good. The Foreman seems smarter if you can leech off some hotel/AirBNB electricity. Maybe get a slow cooker for when you can stay in a place a little longer? Goddamn I love slow cookers.

Slow cookers are the bomb. Cabeza, barbacoa, pork shank... oh yeah...
What I'm really looking for now is an alcohol torch. Planning ahead to when I can fly again.
I think I can slow cook most anything in the hotel hot water and then I just need to torch the surface for the Maillard reaction. My plan is to fill my carry on "liquids" bag with a half dozen 100ml bottles of Everclear. Everclear is the all purpose fuel/beverage/disinfectant.

As Musashi says... this requires more consideration. I just throw everything in and turn it on, like 99% of all humans on the planet, but god dammit this sounds like an easy way to get a nice little flavor enhancer.Mark Leavy wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 7:11 pm Slow cookers are the bomb. We're fortunate to have a couple of options for fiber internet where I live so I'm getting 1Gb / 1Gb. Mesh WiFi brings it down to around 400 / 400 depending on the device. $70/mo.

Now I'm wondering, had I gotten a different (better) router, I would have faster internet?

Re: Daily "Check In" Thread For Us
download first, as kriegs said.
I’ll have to do a test on the desktop, which is hardwired (ethernet cable).Smith1776 wrote: If so, how are your guys' upload speeds so fast?
We have Verizon FiOS which uses fiber optic cable (U.S.). Unfortunately, because of constraints on our little street, they had to put the router in the basement and a “repeater” upstairs. So my desktop is only wired to the repeater.
The smaller devices lose a little more speed to wifi, and something else because they’re small devices.
Still, the newest tablets and phones are usually pretty fast, and for a while our upload speed was close to .

Speed at midnight. Halve it for peak usage times.

I had twice that speed 20 years ago, without the caps.
Although it did cost $130/month including the ISDN telephone line and the internet service.

It might have been cheaper here but we couldn't get it because we are too far from the central office.
Our choices are satellite (expensive and bad ping but otherwise okay) or fixed wireless (reasonable cost per month but very high installation costs).
