Earmarks within a brokerage?

Post by Xan » Wed Jan 15, 2020 8:36 am

Does anybody know of a brokerage with a built-in "earmark" feature? I'd like to have a 4x25 PP, but be able to add money to an earmark, and have that earmark keep up with the growth of the portfolio.

For example, money people give me for the kids' education. I want to put it in my PP and tell the brokerage, "this $400 is for the 'education' earmark". Then it tracks the value of the earmark proportionally to how the account grows overall.

Does this exist?

Sounds like Ally’s buckets, although that might be just for savings.

I've wondered this myself. I haven't seen a feature such as this with any of the brokerage services I've used.

The best I've found is either opening a different account or just using different securities.

Like, if I'm using the PP, I can approximate TSM using 3 or 4 different low cost funds here in Canada. So I'd just use, say, the Vanguard one for my general portfolio, and use the Blackrock one for the earmarked cash.
