Re: 600 Members Coming Up
Saw it in one of the many gold bashing threads on bogleheads. I'm still not sure if a deflationary currency is good, despite thinking about it daily for years :/ "Good for whom" might be part of the answer.

Re: 600 Members Coming Up
I notice we are approaching 1,000 members.
On July 12, 2017, I wrote we were at 599 members. That prompted sweetbethescrivener to sign on as #600. All hail Herman Melville! (The best short story ever)?
Anyway, the time between 600 and today seems short. Is the 4x25 finding followers more quickly?
Great to hear from Pointed Stick. Anyone heard from TennPaGa? And the Desert Portfolio has me as an admirer but when the choice among that, the Golden Butterfly and Harry’ Concoction weighs on me, Harry always seems best.
On to 1,000 or 10,000!

If membership spikes into the thousands, it would probably be time to transition to portfolios more aggressive than Harry'sbedraggled wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2019 6:10 pm I notice we are approaching 1,000 members.

Ocho,
Aggressive Portfolios?
I thought those thousands would be looking to go 4x25, in line with the HBPP philosophy- and it is a lovely philosophy.
Please comment.
Thanks.

Re: 600 Members Coming Up
For the most part I'd love to see the masses adopt Harry Browne's excellent ideas.
On the other hand, I don't expect that will happen, and part of me doesn't want it either. Browne's ideas are simply too countercultural, and unorthodox for the average investor. You really have to understand the nuances of his thinking too before you see how bloody insightful he was.
But yeah, there's a part of me that likes that "elite" feeling of being in such an unusual group. Beyond that, the tight knit feel of this forum is so much better than alternative forums. I don't want that to change.
As for the idea of aggressive/defensive portfolios -- the PP can be turned up to be as aggressive as one likes. Just crank up your VP like I did in the Browne + Graham thread.

I just mean that most people buy high, sell low. They will go for conservative allocations like HBPP after the storm has passed, when it would actually help them to have more risk. Then just before the next storm arrive, they will walk around the golf course holding metal rods.bedraggled wrote: ↑Sun Sep 08, 2019 7:50 pm Ocho,

Yup, just as William Berstein pointed out in his prescient Wild About Harry paper.ochotona wrote: ↑Mon Sep 09, 2019 10:44 amI just mean that most people buy high, sell low. Re: 600 Members Coming Up
Let’s dredge up the member number thread. We are at 985.
How quickly will we reach 1,000?
How quickly will we reach 1,000?
Re: 600 Members Coming Up
I predict gold dumps to $1377.50, and we don't increase members

Re: 600 Members Coming Up
Honestly, what really interests me is the idea of getting together a conference of PP adherents once we gather enough members.
Maybe Craig and/or Tex would be willing to make a comeback for such a thing.
Really though, it would be like a Bogleheads conference but BETTER.

Re: 600 Members Coming Up
I think a year or two ago there were enough members in New York City to have a get-together. Sophie was there, and I think bedraggled; I forget who else.
What I do not recommend is Googling for something like "PP party" in your local town. There are some things you can't unsee.

That’s right. Make sure you only google the full name to avoid that stuff:Xan wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2019 7:18 pm I think a year or two ago there were enough members in New York City to have a get-together. Sophie was there, and I think bedraggled; I forget who else.

Re: 600 Members Coming Up
A bunch of us met in Manhattan in May, 2015.
Sophie, Goodasgold, Barrett, Ryan Melvey and several others were there. Several meetings produced very nice times.
The theme seemed to be an endorsement of the 4x25 Harry Browne Permanent Portfolio.
I moved away and I think the meetings stopped.
If members in the same locale can meet, it is a great idea.
I am in Manhattan 2 or 3 times per year if you NYC people have notions.
The meets were arranged on this site, not Google. Hope that helps.
Thanks.

Re: 600 Members Coming Up
BTW,
Might be an idea to get a Texas meet arranged.
The roster could be
Ocho,
Xan,
Libertarian666
And maybe Medium Tex.
I might drive 1,400 miles for that. (Key word here is “might”).
Thanks.

Re: 600 Members Coming Up
If we can pull together a Texas meeting, I'm interested.
Re: 600 Members Coming Up
That would be great fun. I hate to be a stick-in-the-mud, but with my lift right now if it isn't in Austin, then I probably can't go. Don't plan around me if it needs to be somewhere else.
If it can coincide with West Virginia in town to play the Longhorns (which I think will happen next season) then we might be able to convince Mountaineer to join too. :-) And there might be some other Texans either closeted or lurking.

Re: 600 Members Coming Up
I'd be interested in a Texas meetup as well. I'm in Dallas.

Re: 600 Members Coming Up
If this Texas thing snow balls, I may need to fly. Austin sounds good.
Is Medium Tex in Houston?
Is it true in Texas that miles/distance is not a consideration?
Sorry to have not mentioned Tyler. And mukramesh, you and I joined the forum within days of each other. Great minds....
Can somebody pick me up at the airport?

Has there even been a poll done here as to state or country location of active members?bedraggled wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2019 1:36 pm If this Texas thing snow balls, I may need to fly. Austin sounds good.

If not and there is a desire to do one now, the easiest way to compile would be to follow something like this...
Massachusetts - 1 (with the next person from my state putting a 2 at the end)
Anything outside of the United States could just do their country like...
England - 1

Re: 600 Members Coming Up
I'm coming all the way from Vancouver, Canada, so pretty much anywhere in the states will be a trek for me.
I don't suppose you guys would want to meet in Seattle would you?
EDIT: Really though, I am down to make an effort to meet just about anywhere! It would be great if we could organize some speakers and stuff. I wonder if Terry Coxon would be interested...

Don't ask me how I know, but unless he's moved, I would guess Collins County, so closer to Dallas-Ft Worth than Houston.
I'll let him speak for himself for anything more specific because, you know, privacy.
