The duo told Backchannel that, among many things, they aim to let drivers safely take a sleep break while leaving their truck driving autonomously.
The company said it has already completed one public highway demo of its system, and it is hatching grander plans beyond that.
“We intend to enhance the capabilities of the Otto truck, collect safety data to demonstrate its benefits, and bring this technology to every corner of the U.S. highway system,” Levandowski and Lior wrote.

The U.S. auto industry's home state of Michigan is preparing for the advent of self-driving cars by pushing legislation to allow for public sales and operation of the vehicles. The move is a significant expansion beyond existing state laws which currently sanction such cars for testing only. "It's coming. That is my point. If you think about thehistory of technology, or any scientific invention why would you want to be an alpha or beta tester for self driven cars? What makes you think that a self driving car is less likely to injure you, than your own driving (any time soon)? I say that as someone who has driven in new york city traffic (fortunately not in awhile).
When a new OS for my mac comes out, I wait awhile for all the bugs to get ironed out. I can't imagine doing any less for any self driven car.

No one is advocating beta testing the self-driving car, but you guys are discrediting the massive amount of alpha and beta testing going on into the technology. Google has literally hundreds of thousands of hours self-driving without a single incident. It's not gonna be beta when released unlike Tesla's idiotic cruise control that had near misses.
So I'll take that level of security any day over a human driver. It will be the new, big, bad, hulking SUV on the road that everyone else must fear. Would I buy V1? It depends on who its from and what it is. I'll definitely pass on the Chinese company's self-driving car coming out next year.

Wal-Mart will soon begin testing a grocery delivery service using Uber (Private:UBER) and Lyft (Private:LYFT) drivers as it looks to better compete with rivals like Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). According to a company blog post, Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) is expected to launch the effort in the next two weeks in Denver and another market, charging customers a $7-10 charge for the service. The retail giant said it also anticipates using drones for different business functions - such as inventory management - in another six to nine months.

I would love a self driving car. I live in a suburb of Chicago. I have more faith in radar/cameras/lasers/IR whatever methods used to paint the surrounding picture around my car vs. relying on myself to notice that a drunk is listing into my lane or a head on collision.
I have found myself a few times in my life nodding off for 1-2 seconds on long drives and you snap up and go Holy Shit. Imagining that happening to 18 wheel drivers is not a stretch of the imagination and I'd feel safer with computers driving.
Sure, there is the concern of hacking and weather and construction and such but I think overall in the next 5-10 years it will start being rolled out, we'll see that it works well, and it will roll out even faster.

Did anyone realize that Uber was named after an Ayn Rand novel? Explains a lot as to why they treat their human drivers like shit and why they'll be replaced ASAP with self-autonomous cars. Their new leasing program which -- big surprise! -- Government Sachs is backing along with lower fares dooms human drivers into perpetual debt bondage.
