Technological Unemployment Scream Room

Post by MachineGhost »

Reub's gonna have nightmares! It'll be like a cross between Optimus Prime and the Prototype Series 1000 Terminator.
Unlike others, which are designing new vehicles that drive autonomously, Otto focuses on technology that can be fitted into trucks that are on the road now. Rather than eradicating drivers by making them obsolete, the immediate goal is assistance. The duo told Backchannel that, among many things, they aim to let drivers safely take a sleep break while leaving their truck driving autonomously.

The company said it has already completed one public highway demo of its system, and it is hatching grander plans beyond that.

“We intend to enhance the capabilities of the Otto truck, collect safety data to demonstrate its benefits, and bring this technology to every corner of the U.S. highway system,” Levandowski and Lior wrote.

The U.S. auto industry's home state of Michigan is preparing for the advent of self-driving cars by pushing legislation to allow for public sales and operation of the vehicles. The move is a significant expansion beyond existing state laws which currently sanction such cars for testing only. "It's coming. It's coming fast," Michigan Department of Transportation Director Kirk Steudle said regarding the emerging technology.

Early adopters of self-driving cars: where the bleeding edge, really may be the bleeding edge.

Seriously, is anyone here really so excited that they would get into one of these any time soon?

Well, maybe not you or Reub, but the rest of us would like to be able to go places without the stress of being killed, crippled or dismembered.

P.S. Fix your avatar.

That is my point. If you think about thehistory of technology, or any scientific invention why would you want to be an alpha or beta tester for self driven cars? What makes you think that a self driving car is less likely to injure you, than your own driving (any time soon)? I say that as someone who has driven in new york city traffic (fortunately not in awhile).

When a new OS for my mac comes out, I wait awhile for all the bugs to get ironed out. I can't imagine doing any less for any self driven car.

that’s the tough part with self driven cars, even if you aren’t the one sitting behind the "press here to go button", you are still beta testing if you are on the road with somebody who is...

It is not the same. Being on the road with e.g. a drunk driver is not the same as being a passenger in a car where the driver is drunk to give an analogy.

?
obviously its not the same risk level as being in the car..... but you are still part of the beta test, you are the obstacle or the unpredictable self driven car the machine needs to see and avoid...

No one is advocating beta testing the self-driving car, but you guys are discrediting the massive amount of alpha and beta testing going on into the technology. Google has literally hundreds of thousands of hours self-driving without a single incident. It's not gonna be beta when released unlike Tesla's idiotic cruise control that had near misses.

So I'll take that level of security any day over a human driver. It will be the new, big, bad, hulking SUV on the road that everyone else must fear. Would I buy V1? It depends on who its from and what it is. I'll definitely pass on the Chinese company's self-driving car coming out next year.

Self-driving cars don't sound like much fun to me. Kind of like hiring someone to make love with my wife. ^-^

They may be robotic too... :( And I was really looking forward to personally getting off the planet. Maybe I'll apply for Musk's trip to Mars.

Wal-Mart will soon begin testing a grocery delivery service using Uber (Private:UBER) and Lyft (Private:LYFT) drivers as it looks to better compete with rivals like Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN). According to a company blog post, Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) is expected to launch the effort in the next two weeks in Denver and another market, charging customers a $7-10 charge for the service. The retail giant said it also anticipates using drones for different business functions - such as inventory management - in another six to nine months.

I would love a self driving car. I live in a suburb of Chicago. I have more faith in radar/cameras/lasers/IR whatever methods used to paint the surrounding picture around my car vs. relying on myself to notice that a drunk is listing into my lane or a head on collision.

I have found myself a few times in my life nodding off for 1-2 seconds on long drives and you snap up and go Holy Shit. Imagining that happening to 18 wheel drivers is not a stretch of the imagination and I'd feel safer with computers driving.

Sure, there is the concern of hacking and weather and construction and such but I think overall in the next 5-10 years it will start being rolled out, we'll see that it works well, and it will roll out even faster.

I just knew it!!! It'll be over before it even begins. >:(

The NHTSA plans to release documents that will serve as the foundation for national regulations regarding autonomous vehicles next month, but the framework won't bar states from setting additional standards. The news is a blow to auto companies, which are seeing a potential patchwork of state laws beginning to pop up around the country. California, for example, has proposed barring self-driving cars that don't have steering wheels, pedals and a driver, and New Jersey wants to establish a special autonomous driver's license.

Did anyone realize that Uber was named after an Ayn Rand novel? Explains a lot as to why they treat their human drivers like shit and why they'll be replaced ASAP with self-autonomous cars. Their new leasing program which -- big surprise! -- Government Sachs is backing along with lower fares dooms human drivers into perpetual debt bondage.

Less than a month after Lyft (Private:LYFT) launched scheduled trips, Uber (Private:UBER) is doing the same thing with the rollout of Scheduled Rides. Users can now arrange rides up to 30 days in advance, and as short as 30 minutes ahead of time - currently only available for uberX. The initiative will first launch in Seattle followed by other "top business travel cities."

And in other news:

Software maker Mobileye will supply parts for self-driving cars to Volkswagen (OTCPK:VLKAY), General Motors (NYSE:GM) and others as soon as 2019, and expects the first full autonomous driving on the road by 2121. "In 20 years driving is going to be illegal so no fun anymore," CEO Ziv Aviram declared. "I believe the wave created around autonomous driving is so big that it's already a fact." Mobileye (NYSE:MBLY) already supplies parts for Tesla's (TSLA) semi-autonomous Autopilot system.

Forget about self-driving vehicles, Google (GOOG, GOOGL) co-founder Larry Page is privately funding two flying car companies called Zee.Aero and Kitty Hawk. The small, automated aircraft are being designed to take off and land vertically and may someday carry people short distances as part of an on-demand transportation service. Page already poured more than $100M in Zee.Aero, which employs 150 people and recently expanded operations to an airport hangar in Hollister, CA.
