Since it's the only life I've had unless you believe in re-incarnation I have nothing to compare it to but I can't help but think of how much different it would have been to be born before the age of mass communication. In your list you left out mass shootings and the latest outrage of something somebody said on either the left or right of the political spectrum. I'm sure the list could go on and on.

Not sure I would want to give up the many benefits of living in the modern age, and probably wouldn't choose to do so if I could, but I do think it would be good to disconnect at least from time to time.

ZH is the entity that's extrapolating from the facts reported by the news to say that food prices are probably going to rise due to shortages caused by flooding and subsequent destruction of agricultural capability. That part.. I don't know about, I'm wondering more about the actual extent of the damage. I haven't seen any coverage in my RSS feed (or news, just checked) until I saw something that linked to ZH.

I remember the Mississippi river experiencing a "once in a lifetime" flooding event once in my own lifetime although I can't remember when it was.

As for food prices rising as a response that may be true in the short run but with today's global economy it's hard to believe that some evil capitalists aren't going to rush in and take advantage of the situation to make a profit in the country with the world's largest economy and it will eventually return to normal. A-hole Politicians of all stripes could totally "f***" with that idea if given enough power, of course.

I think that flood did have long term effects on those who lived in the area. Kind of recall watching a documentary about it. Maybe on PBS.

i read an article that was claiming the severity of the flooding (there would have been some flooding there always is) was increased when the gov agency in charge flipped the priority’s from protecting people and property being the first priority to the last, in a list of five or so, and protecting the environment to number one on the list, up from last. apparently they are trying to mimic pre levy water flows and in the grand tradition of central planing and government wisdom they held back to much water, messed it up and made the flooding far worse and far more destructive than it should be....

Some interviews with farmers about the flooding popped up on my tube. I recall a few weeks ago that USDA estimates seemed to imply that the flooding wasn't that big of a deal, and harvests were going to be ok. But it looks like Zero Hedge might have been right, harvests look like they're much lower in the midwest.

Read about the mini ice age around 1780-90, the storms with softball sized hail in Northern Europe that destroyed crops, and the French Revolution. Not too much lag.
