I had a similar experience, though I went to a humble land grant state university. About a decade ago I went to my oldest daughter’s graduation at the same university and my first thought was: “Wow, this place is A LOT nicer than when I was here. Guess I know why tuition is so much more.”

Is means testing for education and medicine a bad thing? You have more $ you pay more if you send your kids to a nice college. If you dont have kids, you pay less income tax toward education. If you decide to take the risk and not buy health insurance, you get means tested and pay the "inflated" sticker price for treatment.

There's corruption issues with colleges like any other organization. Getting rid of tenure and publish-or-perish culture would be help. Science is drudgery not dramatic breakthroughs
