Grocery Stores In Los Angeles Closing Over “Hero Pay”

The county mandated an extra $5/hour which will cost Kroger $20M, so they just decided to close a bunch of stores.

Despite what appears to be a huge increase in gross earnings by grocery stores, the actual net earnings were way down, as operating costs were way up. Earnings for grocery stores have always been tight. COVID didn’t erase that, even with the binge purchasing. Mandating an extra $5 an hour for all employees is a massive increase in operating costs. And some stores have a smaller margin than others, especially in areas where theft is high

Mostly they don't. This is why there's so much squawking about "food deserts" in slums where there are no grocery stores, only bodegas selling potato chips and malt liquor. So some blue districts/states passed enterprise zone legislation, where they offer effectively tax subsidies to stores willing to open in those areas. It all depends on whether the costs of the crime outweigh the subsidies. Either that, or on whether the franchisee is an idiot, which they probably are for taking that bait.

IMO, Cuomo's #metoo troubles are a complete red herring. "They" don't want a lot of questions being asked about how Democrat governors handled the Holocoughs, especially WRT nursing homes. If Cuomo is pinned on his fuck ups, then several more governors might get put under the microscope too.

I could be wrong but doesn't CNN only have about 800k viewers on their primetime line up? That would 1/400 people.

I agree with Pug that if enforcement is problem, enforcement is what they should correct. Because if they throw out bike helmet requirements altogether, it almost looks like they’re saying the helmet requirement is the problem. Or that the enforcement problem is insurmountable.
