If something is free, you are not the customer... you are the product being sold.

Google facebook ect. all pushing the line that the surveillance makes the advertising super potent... really ?
When I switch off my adblocker and see 3/4 of a page of crap that I bought or decided not to buy months ago I get this sudden urge to clear my cookies purchase, right ?

Re: Facebook - The Product is You
I too have adblocker and just saw the CNBC popup asking to please turn it off.
I have never, ever clicked on an ad to the side or inline on Facebook.
Are they possibly affecting me subliminally? Maybe. But if I am typical of the internet/FB/etc browser, and I know my family is similar, I have no idea why companies still think the internet is the ultimate place to buy ads.
I think more and more go the route of Proctor and Gamble and find out paying $$ for internet ads is relatively ineffective.

Well, they put the ads where the eyeballs are. There was just a story yesterday about how advertisers are disenchanted with Disney and Nickelodeon and are happy to put their ads on Youtube videos of kids unboxing toys.Cortopassi wrote: Are they possibly affecting me subliminally? Having the web site use your CPU to mine coins is another new option for that, pug. How do you feel about that one? Assuming it's above-board, of course.

I think the next version of Mac OS (High Sierra) will have some built-in protection against those ads that pop up for things you browsed in the past. Of course it's an arms race, but I'm glad to hear it.gizmo_rat wrote:...

I think that’s in safari 11, it tries to detect and discard tracking cookies. In terms of an ad tracking arms race the Adnauseam plugin is the tactical nuke. https://adnauseam.io/
