Hooray! Forum is back up!
What a lousy time for the forum to go belly up with so much going on. Happily it's back up.
Trumpism is not a philosophy or a movement. It's a cult.

I second that emotion

I propose that if we all go down again, we hang out temporarily on Twitter, finding each other with #gyroscopicinvesting

Ditto ....
DNA has its own language (code), and language requires intelligence. There is no known mechanism by which matter can give birth to information, let alone language. It is unreasonable to believe the world could have happened by chance.
Re: Hooray! Forum is back up!
guys why don't we setup PP Facebook GROUP?
that way if the forum goes down we gave a place to go?

A smart idea. I might set up an extra twitter account just to participate in that. Easy solution.ochotona wrote: I propose that if we all go down again, we hang out temporarily on Twitter, finding each other with #gyroscopicinvesting

Yes to twitter method for temporary communication. Doing without the forum this past week was painful!
On the plus side, I got to catch up on Fred On Everything columns.

I'm working on getting an emergency backup forum set up on my web site.
Anyone who is interested, please message me your email address so I can notify you when it is up.

Re: Hooray! Forum is back up!
We really need to implement all three suggestions:
Twitter
Facebook
Tech novelists backup server
That way, we have four total modes of communication. If at any time on or two are going down, hopefully they are compensated by the other 2-3

I have a "dumb phone."
Never done Twitter. Do not have a Facebook page.
Barrett has my cell number. Guess I should get my cell number to WiseOne and Goodasgold- and probably Tom.
George C Scott as Gen Patton in "Patton" said "God, how I hate the 20th century." I miss it. Facebook? Wanna call me on my grandmother's 1948 Western Electric phone? It's a heavy son-of-a-gun and works during black-outs.
Facebook? Twitter? Pretty funny, eh?
Cheers.

Thanks for hanging in there.

Re: Hooray! Forum is back up!
sk55, et al,
I had a Samsung x427m flip phone for more than 10 years. I bought Ebay replacements in a lot of 6. The lot cost $20. A great phone but eventually the buttons started sticking. I replaced the x427m. Maybe I should have used a lot of contact cleaner. It did everything perfectly.
Now I have another Samsung flip phone. It was left over from the 19th Century, it appears. I miss the x427m. I can't tell which end of the new phone flips open so I miss many calls. Also, I still can't figure out how to set the alarm. My naps are more complicated as a result.
My kids taught me how to text 5 years ago. Sending a text was easier on the x427m, too. [Patton: God, how I hate the 20th Century! George didn't have to deal with a cell phone. Lucky guy!]
There was an internet posting in the last week about folks going back to "dumb phones." Seems they are in despair about constantly being "connected." I am ahead of my time with my current flip phone. (If you fine people want advice on market timing, let me know.).

I've been impressed with LiquidWeb (particularly with their technical support) and recommend them.

I've been happy with NameCheap lately.
Human behavior is economic behavior. The particulars may vary, but competition for limited resources remains a constant.

Re: Hooray! Forum is back up!
I use iPage (which is on the list of crappy companies above), and my web site is up close to 100% of the time. They also have pretty good customer support via chat.
Re: Hooray! Forum is back up!
I use DigitalOcean or Linode for cheap bare metal servers and Google Compute Engine when I need something really reliable + scaleable that's still flexible. If I have client money to burn, don't need much flexibility, and/or don't want to deal with any DevOps/SysAdmin stuff whatsoever I'll use Heroku instead of Google. But I'm almost always dealing with custom apps.
What's the software/database that this forum runs on? DigitalOcean has one-click installs of many common platforms.
