Would You Join Diaspora* ? (as backup)
This would not be something that would take away from all the hard work done by Craig, Medium Tex, moderators and others. Rather, it would just be a neutral, distributed/de-centralized place (as far as I can tell) with no leader. In short, a place where we could get our posting fix the next time this site is down for most of the day.
Of course, anything written there could always be posted to this forum once the site's back up.
Just a thought. Check it out and let me know what you think. I've been here at gyroscopic a long time and have no intention of leaving.

Alternatively, if you have alternative suggestions, please post them here.
I don't like google+ because lately Google has been Big Brotherly, violating their Don't Be Evil motto by listening in on phone mic's. Hate Facebook.

Probably not, to answer the thread title. I don't really understand the concept and benefits from reading the two links. I rarely, and try not to ever, put anything in print I would not want to be on the front page of the local newspaper so I really don't have anything to hide. I figure no matter what the privacy guarantee is from some website, it really isn't private anyway. If big bro comes after me because of something I write, I've got much bigger problems than what I wrote. But, I'm interested in how others see it; I may be missing something significant. Who knows what the right answer is ........

Fair enough, Mountaineer. Whatever one feels in this thread, that is the right answer, I assure you.

Sounds like a plan, MangoMan. I'm going out of town the day after tomorrow, so if I don't get to it tmw, then this weekend. I'll send out invites, and read further about the company. My name on there is orangedata, by the way.

I'll play if you invite. And I can't resist "orangedata"??????? There has to be some hidden meaning there!dualstow wrote: Sounds like a plan, MangoMan. No hidden meaning, Mountaineer, at least not yet.
I just combined two words which I like the sound of.
Anyway, the forum was broken at the beginning of my ten-day trip and again when I returned yesterday. I plan to remain loyal to it, but again, it feels good to "post" somewhere when you don't know when the forum's going to come back online. If anyone's still interested:

If not, no harm no foul.

That's ok, neither am I. We'll figure it out.MangoMan wrote: Okay, I joined. But I'm not sure where I'm supposed to go once logged in.

I think we should start by making sure posts are set to public with a #permanentportfolio tag anywhere within the post. It's 10pm here and I have to attend to other things, but I'll be exploring it throughout the week now that I'm back in town. You're right: seems more urgent than before.

Which I have done as a test.dualstow wrote: I think we should start by making sure posts are set to public with a #permanentportfolio tag
Or perhaps #harryb for those hunting and pecking on a phone keyboard?
Will go through the tutorial before bed tonight.

I navigated to that site but never saw anything load successfully. What should the landing page look like?

It should have a logo like this: http://images.sodahead.com/polls/003735 ... xlarge.png
You know what, though? I've had slow internet from my cable company all weekend long, and I didn't realize that Diaspora was loading slowly independently of that.
So, we should probably scrap the Diaspora idea. Nothing is more frustrating when the forum doesn't load, except when the forum doesn't load and then the backup doesn't load!
I thought the decentralization was a nice idea, and that it would attract pp'ers like you, Tyler and PS. This site shows just how decentralized it is: http://podupti.me/
It's a list of "pods" that one can sign up for to join diaspora. Pods are just servers hosted by people around the world who help Diaspora spread. There is no huge corporate server set-up like Facebook has (and maybe that's why it's not loading.
) I discovered it while reading through the tutorial last night, only after I had provided the joindiaspora dot com link.

So where does that leave us? Reddit? ochotona's Google+ group? Or just doing without until the forum's back online?

I'm pretty sure I could host a WordPress blog on my website. If anyone is interested, I'll look into that.

That could probably tide us over during a crash, yep.

During the last forum crash, I actually looked for it, but I misremembered the line above. I was looking for your handle at a site that already had WordPress, and ended up on a site about relationships.Libertarian666 wrote: I'm pretty sure I could host a WordPress blog on my website.
