Sitting at work can be as bad as smoking

Post by ns3 » Tue Jan 21, 2014 5:41 pm

Yes, and walking down a quiet country road can be as bad as walking across a minefield. It all depends, doesn't it?

I nominate this for the most fact-free article in recent memory....

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2014/01/20/ ... s-smoking/

But still, I have observed that my (arthritic) neck and back feel a lot better when standing and I'm looking for same way to do an easily convertible stand-up desk for use in the modern cubicle farm environment. My ideal design would be like the chairs a lot of us have in our cubicles where we just push a lever and it floats up, or we can push it down. Would like to be able to just spend a couple of hours a day standing.

Most of the ones I've seen have adjustable legs so you would have to take your monitor and keyboard off to re-adjust and this would be a pain in the A** I think.

Also, don't want to spend a fortune.

And also, I think this could be a way for somebody to make some big bucks inventing something that would be relatively cheap along the lines of what I'm suggesting as this issue gets more and more press.

You must be newer here than I thought. This "fact-free article" aside, look for the thread featuring Medium Tex's standing desk!

old thread
So are walking/standing desks dead at this point?
Was the whole sitting-is-death thing a fad or is it still accepted?

Not sure, but I've got a standing desk and I love it. I get antsy sitting for too long.

I think that's what triggered the thought in my head. Or a similar headline.

I think sitting is like being in outer space.  Its relaxing but you don't want to be there too long or you start to atrophy and turn into a SVOL.  But I doubt just standing alone has as much benefits as high intensity exercise.  It doesn't come without long-term costs, either.

I think that the key is just to MOVE when you are awake...and be still when you are asleep.

I still have my standing desk and split my time between sitting and standing.

It is TennPaGa's definition: Sedentary Vat of Lard.

Ah, I'm glad I didn't spend any extra time trying to find the definition, then. I would have been shit vout of luck.

This is what coffee is made for:  excuse to get up and walk around a few times a day.

I find that my commute, which includes 20 minutes of walking on hilly streets twice a day, combined with some AM stretches, helps me avoid the usual ills from sitting (back pain, piriformis  syndrome etc).  On the other hand, it's been no fun whatsoever for the plantar fasciitis.  There's just no way to win at this game!
