Re: Assumptions you didn't know you've made
The point is, intolerance of intolerance is a tautology. It's a great illustration of MT's point how people who consider themselves open-minded and tolerant can have huge blind spots. You don't have to be intolerant to be disapproving, or to do what you have to do.Dieter wrote:Intolerant of the intolerant when they act on their intolerance....Pointedstick wrote: Probably the best one I've heard was, "I'm very open-minded, but if you ask me, those intolerant Republicans should all be loaded onto a spaceship and shot into the sun."

That was the point - difference between my response to someones beliefs vs them making me adhere to beliefs.Pointedstick wrote:The point is, intolerance of intolerance is a tautology. Someone believe the earth is flat - one response (may discuss, may just shake my head and move on)
They want to pass a law making globes illegal - no
And maybe intolerant is too strong, but the first definition "1 : unable or unwilling to endure", which iimplies more active disagreement than "disapprove".

OP – What a great post. I did not even realize that I looking at the avatar and running it through my own past experiances and what the picture meant to me.
What I think I "see" in the Avatar:
PS – Nelson Mandela pops into my head
Medium-Tex – first glance Charlie Sheen from Platoon; at the end of the movie – then a young Bruce Campbell from Army of Darkness
Wild About Harry – thought that was his real picture until I found out it was Harry Browne from the 1970’s.
TennPaGA – Rick Springfield; song Jessie’s Girl pops into my head
Craigr – shrunken head maybe; movie Beetlejuice pops into my head

Moderate assumption: Conservatives are half idiots, liberals are half idiots!
Libertarian assumption: Who cares, just leave me alone.
My assumption: We are all simultaneous saints and sinners!
Anyone want to make an assumption about me?

DNA has its own language (code), and language requires intelligence. There is no known mechanism by which matter can give birth to information, let alone language. It is unreasonable to believe the world could have happened by chance.

I stand corrected. But you look so much like a Mark III.k9 wrote:No, I'm not. I'm a Mark IV.smurff wrote: I always thought you were the K9 who used to hang with Doctor Who.

I'm happiest when I approach those with different ideas like an anthropologist.
I really want to understand the rationale for other people's beliefs. I want to understand the mental processes that led them to assemble and interpret reality in the ways that they do.
I don't want to distract them with my own beliefs unless they ask me to explain them and I think that they really want to hear what I have to say.
I don't want to make people feel uncomfortable while talking with me. It's not that I fear challenging them, it's just that I know once most people feel threatened their thought processes turn more reptilian and this state of mind seems to generate very little in the way of new insights.

Speaking of assumptions, PointedStick, I've always assumed that your name comes from the old Monty Python sketch about the self-defense class. Does it?

I was watching that clip and saw the following 3:15 clip from George Carlin and it blew me away. So much packed into three minutes. It's a summary of much of what we talk about here.

Speaking of "assumption you didn't know you've made", as a child I had always assumed Mr. Conductor from Thomas the Tank Engine was a sweet old man:MediumTex wrote:I was watching that clip and saw the following 3:15 clip from George Carlin and it blew me away. Then once I grew up a bit and watched this, well, my mind exploded, "Seven Dirty Words" (9:47 - warning: contains dirty words):

I don't know if you use a Mac, smurff, but I'm lovin' these icons.smurff wrote: I always thought you were the K9 who used to hang with Doctor Who.

It's especially nice to have a tardis icon for Time Machine-dedicated volumes.

Thanks for the link, dualstow. I'm on a Mac, so this is a great site. I liked the Tardis, but the Daleks are my favorite evil robots--which reminds me of that other topic we're doing on this forum about a world full of robots.dualstow wrote:I don't know if you use a Mac, smurff, but I'm lovin' these icons.smurff wrote: I always thought you were the K9 who used to hang with Doctor Who.
