Those are stunning! What a find.

It's really sad to think that these people were making their way through what looked like a relatively peaceful and prosperous society at the time without realizing the misfortune that was coming their way very soon.

Little did they know that the next 80 years of their country's history would be filled with war, oppression, cruel dictators, the outlawing of religion and a general day to day crappiness of life.

It is quite awe inspiring to think of what was going to happen next (WW1, etc).  I'm impressed also by the clothing people wear, and how you can tell their station in life simply by the quality, or lack thereof, in their clothing.

Just amazing.  Thanks so much for posting.
He used a specialized camera to capture three black and white images in fairly quick succession, using red, green and blue filters, allowing them to later be recombined and projected with filtered lanterns to show near true color images.
I had never heard of this brilliant, rather low-tech method before.  The results are great!

Thanks for posting these. Getting a color glimpse of life in the twilight of pre-World War I Imperial Russia is a rare treat. I have a huge fascination with photography showing the details or ordinary life in the past. One of my favorite sites is...

A recent example would be this photo of people lounging on the porch of the Ft. Henry Clinton Hotel near Lake George in 1908...

Or these photos of people at the beach in 1905 and 1910 respectively...

How is it everyone seems to be so less attractive looking back then compared to today?  Its hard to believe the epigentics could change so rapidly in just two or three generations of breeding.

Many of those photographed were from some of the more ethnic areas of the Czar's domain. Not everyone looked less attractive back in the day. In general I find that people dressed better and were better mannered than their counterparts today. But of course your mileage will vary depending on country and culture.

When I go there now, these seem to be the only ones from 100 years ago. Was there something different available when you initially posted the below?

Thanks

You can use the Wayback Machine to find stuff like that:

There are essentially no differences in clothing or buildings in the pictures of Samarkand 1910 and Afghanistan 2010.
