Re: YouTube Junkie
Interestingly, the author explains one of the major mysteries of the Titanic: the reason why the lifeboats were sent off half-empty. It was because they would be too difficult to lower safely all the way to the water when full, so they planned to finish loading them from a gangway lower down. The problem is that no one told Lightoller and the others about how fast the ship was sinking, and they only realized this when the gangways ended up underwater. By which time, the distance to the water probably wasn't such an issue. He also indicates that they ran out of time filling lifeboats and weren't able to launch the last two properly, so that even if the Titanic did have enough boats it's not clear they would have been able to use them.Ad Orientem wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2020 3:17 pmWiseOne wrote: ↑Sat Feb 01, 2020 11:11 am A recording of Charles Lightoller, second officer of the Titanic, describing his experiences during and after the sinking. Also, I highly recommend reading his life story. It is amazing, deserving of a biography IMHO. Among other things, he took his personal boat to Dunkirk in 1940, at age 66, to rescue British soldiers. This is portrayed in the "Dunkirk" movie although the character is given a different name.
Lightoller's autobiography. He was indeed a fascinating man who had an incredible life.

Re: YouTube Junkie
No, no no. Chicago's '25 or 6 to 4' is was out when Green Day were in diapers. The ad features the Elements' remix of that, not Green Day.Kriegsspiel wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 8:53 amI think it's fun that they Vanilla Iced the riff from Green Day, a band not exactly known for being very Team Americadualstow wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 12:09 pm I feel humbled by the story above, especially because i just came here to say I like the Chicago remix/reworking in this GoArmy ad. Tim is good (but should have been wearing a plain white t-shirt) but the Aussie is very quick on the uptake and outgo, quite talented. I'd have to give the IQ medal to the Aussie.Kriegsspiel wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2020 11:42 amSpeaking of HIGH IQ, this is brilliant. DNA has its own language (code), and language requires intelligence. There is no known mechanism by which matter can give birth to information, let alone language. It is unreasonable to believe the world could have happened by chance.

That was only part of it. I think you can watch all of it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ra-itTK ... oyURD9Twi4.
I saw the whole thing years ago (I think on C-Span!).

Re: YouTube Junkie
Yes, agree on all songs you named.
The guitarist in this video did an excellent solo (and Jimmy Page seemed be agreeing as he was watching and listening to it!).

Matjak!
How is this for a lot of old guys doing the playing??!!
And, how do you evaluate each of the three drummers. As I write this I'm watching the younger guy do the longest solo. Sounds fine to my ears!

I like Metallica.
Was supposed to see them in Moscow with a bunch of my English students but I had to bow out. Wish I had made it.

Re: YouTube Junkie
I saw them once.
And, they did one song. The same song as was in the video - Enter Sandman.
In 2013 I went to Mariano Rivera Day at Yankee Stadium.
Every time he entered a game at Yankee Stadium they would play Enter Sandman as he was coming to the pitcher's mound.
While I was waiting for the ceremonies to start, I asked one of the usher's if Metallica was going to be there to play that song live. She said that they would.
This is the actual performance I saw that day!

Flag raising on a New York skyscraper February 17, 1926. When patriotism still meant something and New Yorkers had balls of tempered steel. (appx 3 minutes)

If you don't mind me asking. Why? Is the US society better/worse than then?
As an aside I remember looking at my Grandmothers "1901 Young Women's Handbook"
First few pages had photos of the British Royalty and even the Czar and Czarina of Russia.

With a few commonsense exceptions we are far worse off. Conceding the advantages of modern medicine, I like being in my 50s, alive and with most of my teeth, and I appreciate living in a world where most of my fellows understand the virtues and pleasures of regular bathing, but we have lost so much. And I too have a picture of the imperial family over my desk.
