That applies to any fuel source. We drive around with tanks full of energy-dense gasoline which is poised to release that energy rapidly. There are going to be dangers with any fuel source.

Wasn't it briefly preceded by safer steam power? (Albeit not in today's regulatory environment)

Yeah, that's true, the earliest cars were steam or electric. But then they figured out how wonderful gasoline is..

Did any of those steam engines on cars blow up?

I do remember reading that steam powered boat boilers exploding were definitely a major problem.
