That's interesting. For the past year or two, I've been getting the vibe that Eastern Europe is making a comeback of sorts.Xan wrote: ↑Wed Dec 29, 2021 10:01 am Vil, here's an article I just saw about Bulgaria. Interesting!

Re: Bulgaria
The people who vote for the bad politicians don't leave.
Before Covid, Arizona was talking about cutting taxes.
Re: Bulgaria
They've driven the taxpayers and many Americans out. It's a winning formula for the left.
Re: Bulgaria
Xan, thanks for sharing. Well.. while there is certainly some migration inflow in the recent months, I would rather use the stock charting term 'fake rally' (where you do have a price rally not confirmed by volume or alike, so it ends drooping..) to describe it. Same way as fake rallies I expect this inflow to be short-lived and most-important - fake. There are couple of reasons behind - once Covid is away, most likely some of those people will return back abroad; and what's worth to note - those are not exactly the people that Bulgaria is in desperate need of. Do not get me wrong on what I will say - there is a place for everyone under the sun... however, the vast majority of the 2-3 millions that left the country in the last 3 decades are high grade scientists, top quality IT geeks, ..., you name it, and on the other hand people that tend to return now are ones that did not settle well enough on their places abroad or ones that have kind of volatile jobs ..Xan wrote: ↑Wed Dec 29, 2021 10:01 am Vil, here's an article I just saw about Bulgaria. Personally, I do not feel an optimist at all. Will use another analogy - this time taken from chemistry - for many of the chemical reactions to start, run and end in a graceful way, you need critical mass of some of the ingredients. Having said that, for a decent shift from post-communism to an established democracy governed by the supremacy of law you need a critical mass of well educated, hard-working and honest people. And to be fair I do see the worthy people that left the country (and will never ever return(assumption!)) as part of this critical mass, leaving the chemical reaction here fruitless, as there is no power to ignite and keep it burning ...
But that's my simplistic point of view, I like keeping things simple for my own ease of digestion

There were some articles last year about New Yorkers escaping the plaguey city to relax in places like Croatia and work remotely. It looked very pleasant and affordable.
9pm EST Explosions in Iran (Isfahan) and Syria and Iraq. Not yet confirmed.

God damn Vil, put down that Doom Juice and pick up a Hope Soda. If Ireland could do it, I'm sure Bulgaria can too.
I'll be visiting Bulgaria, hopefully, in the near future. I plan on checking out Nesebar, Sofia, and Varna.

You there, Ephialtes. May you live forever.

I enjoyed Veliko Tarnovo, the old section of Plovdiv, Bansko & the Rila Monastery when I was there back in 2002. Only changed buses in Sofia so nothing to report there. Kriegs, unless you are going to Bulgaria to dry out, you must try the Menta!Kriegsspiel wrote: ↑Thu Dec 30, 2021 3:30 pm I'll be visiting Bulgaria, hopefully, in the near future. I crossed into Bulgaria from Edirne, Turkey and there were no buses so I hired a cabbie for 40 euros to take me 150km or so to Plovdiv.

I prefer the good old Reality-style Beer (which is the drink that lead me to PP and this forum, not the Doom Juice or the Hope Soda )Kriegsspiel wrote: ↑Thu Dec 30, 2021 3:30 pm God damn Vil, put down that Doom Juice and pick up a Hope Soda.
On another note, here, in BG there are places for any taste, the ones you've mentioned are more for younger folks looking for party (especially the resort that's just nearby Nessebar - "Sunny Beach" is notorious amongst EU party beasts and UK drunkies). Places mentioned by barrett are more for a culture trip. You may include Shipka monument as well in his list.
