I use FreeTaxUSA https://www.freetaxusa.com/ for the past number of years, $0 federal fee, $12 state fee. Covers most reasonably complicated situations.

I tried this last year and was disappointed. Import was not complete like it was with HRBlock, and problems with K-1s. Totally worth the $25 for Block Deluxe on sale.

Was the article correct that Turbo Tax users have to pay a $45 federal filing fee and a $40 state filing fee.

Last year was the first time I used H&R Block to e-file. Free for federal. I think about $20 for state filing.

Yes, the TurboTax price for state filing is $40. And the price for federal filing depends on the TurboTax version you're using.

They have Free, Deluxe, Premier, and Self-Employed versions. This past year I used the Premier version and paid $55 for my federal filing (using a discount through Fidelity, I think). I think I had to use Premier to handle stuff like taxable investments and restricted stock unit (RSU) compensation.
