Perpetual Critical Thinking Thread

Post by tomfoolery » Tue Apr 06, 2021 11:37 pm

Hi friends,

I was discussing my long-time democratic politics with a [now former] friend this evening and hit a road block where I couldn't think clearly. This has happened to be a lot lately, when discussing current events with [now former] friends the last couple months. They create such a ridiculous counter argument to my beliefs that I can't even respond in the moment. What they say is so stupid it's like if they said 2+2 = 5 and I can't counter that!

I'll keep this thread ongoing with a different post over time as I hit new critical thinking hurdles. Here's one for tonight to start:

I argued that hate crime violence against Asian-Americans is up because of QAnon conspiracies that COVID19 was released from a Wuhan-based virology lab. And idiot white supremacists believe that nonsense and then go out and assault Asians they see in public.

Then my friend (who refuses to wear a mask, btw) told me that liberals (that's his name for me now, because anyone who isn't an alt right extremist to him is a liberal), he told me that liberals say that "anti-maskers" believe COVID is a hoax and isn't real. And he said, how can the right-wing simultaneously believe that both the virus is a hoax yet at the same time are so angry that China released it that they beat up random Asians on the street?

And I just couldn't respond in the moment so I took the high road and walked away.

Cognitive Dissonance fostered by their now departed dear leader.

China--Bad. Taking our jobs, taking our money. Giving us a virus. Doesn't have to be about the virus. Just has to be, darn, they just...look different, ya know? Easy to spot. Remember the Japanese? Easy peasy. Asian women, even easier...except, oops (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zA4Sr63f2EM)

Even those darn Chinese walking around in the US. They're all in on it, don't cha know? Those 16 hour a day cooks and laborers all dial back into the homeland at night to get their orders. I get this all from my wife, she dials in at 8PM.

I think I should be christened TF II after this post. Pretty proud of myself.

But seriously, doesn't have to be about anything related to the virus. You look, talk, smell, walk, eat, believe, etc. different than me, and with nothing better to do people find some way to hate.

Over 1/3 of San Francisco's population is Asian, and the city has a large number of homeless people, many of whom are afflicted with untreated psychiatric issues.

So when a mentally disturbed homeless guy in San Francisco attacks two people who both happen to be Asian, of course the news headline and story have to mention that the victims were Asian (such a rarity in San Francisco!) and imply that the motivation for the attack was likely race (couldn't have been random attacks due to psychiatric issues!). ::)

100% agree. Like the massage places murders, that guy had mental/sex issues, and it just so happens massage places are run a lot by Asians. No doubt media has latched onto this.

They hate Asians because Asians supposedly act white. You know--they work hard, study hard, become accomplished in racist things like science and classical music, build businesses--nose to the grindstone stuff. Inferior people resent being shown up. Because nobody's better or more capable than anyone else, and because you didn't build that anyway.

Ha, that's a good one!

I think most conservatives do believe that the virus isn't a hoax, but they are not happy with the government-imposed controls inflicted on us in the name of controlling the virus. With the claim that the edicts are backed up by science, even though science shows those beliefs to be wrong. I just wish they could state it that way. It's weird how in other threads, people are talking at cross purposes because views are not being expressed clearly.

That's a debatable question, but it's the perception that matters.

Following your logic then, it could be argued that any attacks on Asians are in reality anti-white aggression.
I will admit, this idea would never have occurred to me.

Hi Friends,

Got into a gun control debate today that I had to walk away from. I applauded Biden for banning ghost guns. My friend asked me if I knew what a ghost gun was, and I told him it didn’t matter, look at the gun violence in the news everyday, we have to do something.

He then NRA-splains to me that they are 80% finished gun receivers. So they aren’t guns, they are a piece of metal that’s 80% in the shape of a gun and requires 20% remaining effort to drill holes and stuff into it. And that it’s not illegal to make your own gun.

So he actually tried arguing that you shouldn’t need a background check to build your own gun. Because the federal government only has authority to regulate interstate commerce. I ask if people should be allowed to build their own nuclear bomb because that seemed like an appropriate analogy to me. He rolled his eyes.

Then he tells me if Biden bans 80% receivers, that people will just make 79% receivers, meaning an extra hole is needed on top of the holes needed in an 80% receiver. Because now you’d need to do 21% of the final machining to make it a gun.

I tell him those should be banned too. He says what about 78% of a gun. Of course I tell him that too should be banned. Well this guy keeps dropping the numbers down until he gets to a 0% gun receiver, just a block of metal that could be made into a gun if you did 100% of the machining.

I had to walk away from this argument because he clearly is just mimicking the NRA talking points he heard on Fox News.
