Continuing Education Options

Post by Smith1776 » Mon Mar 15, 2021 3:57 pm

So in addition to the CompTIA professional certifications I have also found some other interesting continuing education options that are available. The most robust platform I've found is called edX. edX is a joint venture online educational platform founded by Harvard and MIT. The platform offers so called micro credentials such as a MicroBachelors in computer science or a MicroMasters in software development.

One of the things that's always irked me about continuing education and self-paced learning is the lack of certification that actually proves you've done extra work. edX may be an inexpensive way to bridge the gap between unverified learning and ultra expensive (and time consuming) formal education on campus.

Credentials on the platform are inexpensive if you decide to purchase them, but the real kicker is that you can do the courses for free if you want to. The only downside to the free route is that you won't get a verified certificate. Still, you could put it on your resume perhaps as "self-paced education" or "continuing education" even if you didn't get the credential. At the very least you still get the benefit of the structure of having a real course instead of just wandering around stackoverflow trying to teach yourself.

Here are some of the really cool programs I found.

I will likely go for the MicroMasters program in software development (the last link).

The other options are too simplistic for me now. Still, nice to know those kinds of options are there to recommend to others!

I thought this was important, as you've posted nerdy things before.
