You know you've found a field of endeavour you're genuinely interested in when you continue to read the textbook after your courses are done.

There's a whole swathe of material we didn't cover such as the use of special purposes registers that enable SSE and AVX extensions. Super interesting stuff!

I think the desire to really understand must be genetic. It is completely orthogonal to the need to get good grades or succeed in life.

That's cool that you're motivated to learn more within your field of study, Smithers.

Enjoy it while you still have the time. After you get a full-time job it'll get harder. After you get married, it'll get harder still. And after you have kids it'll become nearly impossible. ;)

But it is not age dependent.
When I was a teen, I used to spend weeks absorbed in a single field of study and would absorb everything about it to the exclusion of anything else.

That, of course, went by the wayside with job, wife, kids, etc.

But, now, I find myself doing it again. Amazingly delightful.

I just recently received Jordan Peterson's new book Beyond Order: 12 More Rules For Life.

I am about halfway through and I am finding it quite phenomenal. Unlike typical self-help drivel, Peterson's academic and clinical credibility as a psychologist really shines through. He has an amazing ability to enunciate and articulate the things that everyone seems to think, but no one seems to know how to really say. It truly is a gift he has.

Here are the 12 rules in the new book. Obviously just seeing the rules themselves does not do them justice without reading how they are expounded upon in the book. Nonetheless, it's a good peek.

  1. "Do not carelessly denigrate social institutions or creative achievement."
  2. "Imagine who you could be and then aim single-mindedly at that."
  3. "Do not hide unwanted things in the fog."
  4. "Notice that opportunity lurks where responsibility has been abdicated."
  5. "Do not do what you hate."
  6. "Abandon ideology."
  7. "Work as hard as you possibly can on at least one thing and see what happens."
  8. "Try to make one room in your home as beautiful as possible."
  9. "If old memories still upset you, write them down carefully and completely."
  10. "Plan and work diligently to maintain the romance in your relationship."
  11. "Do not allow yourself to become resentful, deceitful, or arrogant."
  12. "Be grateful in spite of your suffering."

Even CNN is showing the migrant “crisis” (their word) as dozens try to cross into the Rio Grande. Maybe there’s hope for the media after all?
Nah, probably not.
(This is a one-off post. i’m not sure where to put it).

Reminds me of a Mark Twain quote - "Once you establish a reputation as an early riser you can sleep until noon".

The CNN version would be "Once you re-establish a reputation for honest reporting you can continue to lie through your teeth".

So how did ya'al celebrate π day?

I walked along the beach, had some prime rib, talked to strangers, compiled my taxes and decided my market moves for tomorrow.

Maybe not, if they're the dick relatives. But if you like them then absolutely, I hope they recover and go on to live long happy lives. But if they're the dick relatives, again, I understand if you are comfortable with them getting choked out like Ken Shamrock*.

The gal next to me tonight was yammering some long drawn out story and said something something ... “torlet paper”

I’m pretty sure I’ve never heard that before, but my brain went straight to “damn, girl, you from Boston?”

She was. North End.

I so love language. And our brains our mysterious things.

Huh. I thought Bostonians just don’t pronounce Rs. “Bah” instead of “bar”, “cah” instead of “car”, etc. Wouldn’t have guessed “torlet”.

LOL. Yea probably.

I was once at a friend's friend's place in Manhattan for a party. His girlfriend was smoking hot. Completely unintelligible Boston accent. Drunk-Bostonian is nearly a foreign language.

Everyone calls me 'sir' here in TN. Still freaks me out, but I appreciate the politeness/respectfulness.
