Yea, but I've been doing a lot of hiking lately and needed the extra calories. It's been a couple of years since I've had a slice of cheesecake. An old fashioned, on the other hand...

How many hard-boiled eggs could you eat at a sitting?
Less than fifty. I've never had more than a dozen at once.

In my younger days, before I developed an appreciation for single malts from Speyside, I liked Southern Comfort Old Fashioneds. That ‘like’ completely disappeared one New Years eve after several OFs and a couple dozen raw oysters, none of which were nearly as good coming back up as they were going down. 🤮

Just assumed it was one of the many drinks I've heard of, mostly from movies, that I have never ordered. I stick with beer 99.99% of the time.

Most interesting drink name I ever ran into was an "orgasm". My wife asked me to order one for her on a cruise ship. Had to rehearse how to ask the bartender for it before I stepped up to the bar, especially since she was female. Imagine the possibilities.

Southern Comfort. College. Same kind of night. Never drank the stuff again. I could still make myself gag thinking about it.

Didn't you go to UIUC Corto? All we drank there was Everclear in Hawaiian Punch, or beer. Although as a freshman, I do remember ordering Tequila Sunrises, Whiskey Stone Sours and Sloe Gin Fizzes in the bars. Ick.
Yep. Everclear. Ahhh, yet another night, that if I did now, I would most certainly have ended up in the hospital. Bars, all we looked for were quarter beers. What it was, I never knew.

The only time I remember seeing someone black out in front of my eyes was the result of Everclear. It's an impressive beverage.

If by impressive you mean causes violent vomiting and horrible hangovers if you drink too much of it, then yes, it's an impressive beverage. :P

Vodka is the ideal hard beverage in my opinion. Unpretentious ethanol, minimal impurities, easy on the breath.
And you can put herbs and caraway seed in it and make aquavit.

Smithers, that looks delicious!

ADDED: I’ve never drunk Everclear, but I would use it as an expensive sanitizer.

I used to subscribe to that exact philosophy, except it's a boring, tasteless drink.
The vodka I'm drinking RIGHT NOW tastes like orange soda, I love it.
I prefer whisky or gin these days when I am avoiding beer for the carbs/calories.
I've been making brandy old-fashioneds lately, great stuff!

Just starting to read the book....but right away he impresses me to no end with this sentence: "You can use Bing.com, DuckDuckGo.com, or Google.com to search any health topic."

That he did not take the typical approach of saying "Google it" tells me that, indeed, this IS going to be a different type book!

Speaking of nightcaps, and spirits with bad memories, Jägermeister made my skin crawl for the longest time, but did you know it's just a regular, slightly stodgy digestif in Germany?

I carry 2 100ml bottles of everclear in my TSA liquids bag. I use it as a cleaner, disinfectant, fire starter/camp stove and occasional spike.

In a semi related note, I found I can get around the TSA restrictions on lighters with a rechargeable plasma arc lighter. It looks like a pen and has no fuel. And if questioned I plan on calling it a UV light. Which, it sorta is.

And Southern Comfort is an abomination.

No problem. I invented this thing I call a (air quotes) “cocktail” where I mix the vodka with tasty stuff.

Tempranillo, by a mile (that’s kilometer in Americanese). So smooth and drinkable.
Valpolicella, but I don’t often see it.
Honestly, I buy dry stuff for cooking and end up drinking it.

MangoMan wrote: Thu Oct 29, 2020 7:26 pm See, if I'm going to start adding with high calorie mixers, I can just drink beer. When I drink gin, whisky or brandy on the rocks/neat there are very few calories and zero carbs. Add an orange soda and you're at the same calorie load as an IPA.
I do like gin. Broker’s is good value.
But if you can wait 3 months ( drink something else in the meantime) bruise some caraway seed, anise and cinnamon and put it in a nearly full bottle of vodka. Leave in the sunlight.

Agreed. But I can almost never find a good Tempranillo in the states. It doesn’t compare with the Tempranillo wines in Logroño. Except last week in Basalt CO at the Tempranillo restaurant. Tasted just like Spain.
