Does anyone on the forum live near Cambridge, Massachusetts?
Please define near.
Close enough so as to not be inconvenient to grab a beer and walk around Harvard campus.
I still find the James Rickards portfolio fascinating.

About 90 miles and less than a 2 hour drive for me.

Oliver R. Smoot was selected by his Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity pledgemaster because he was the pledge deemed shortest—which made measuring the bridge the most labor-intensive—and he was the "most scientifically named".[2][5] To implement his use as a unit of measure, Smoot repeatedly lay down on the bridge, let his companions mark his new position in chalk or paint, and then got up again. Eventually, he got tired from so much exercise and was carried thereafter by the fraternity brothers to each new position.[6][7]

Smoot graduated from MIT in 1962, and then attended Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., where he obtained his Juris Doctor. He served as chairman of the American National Standards Institute from 2001 to 2002,[8] and then as president of the International Organization for Standardization from 2003 to 2004.[1][9] He is a distant relative of Nobel Prize in Physics winner George Smoot.

Forced to upgrade my phone after a decade. Got this off slickdeals for $130. Still might be a good deal at 180, for unlocked no bloatware

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BFYRV4CD

Tech has come a long way. Instant real-time position of local buses. Cant imagine using transit with paper schedules.

Thanks to Vinny(?) for pointing out https://messages.google.com/ where you can use desktop to write texts

Looking forward to when these phones scold you for buying meat. Commies better be good for something

Yes, I live on that Google Messages for anything texting related.

I also have installed on this computer - Microsoft's Phone Link:

What Is Microsoft Phone Link on Windows 10 and 11?

Messages for Web helps me tolerate cellphones. Of course, most messaging apps also exist on the desktop - Signal, Threema, Telegram, Apple’s Messages. If only we had the chance to use them when receiving codes from a bank, etc. I would ditch stock Messages in a heartbeat.

Smoot - wow, he was a human cubit!

I’m having flashbacks of Good Will Hunting and Ben Affleck’s character talking about how he’d anticipated equations on the walls.

Looks like some of you are close..ish???

There is a strong probability I will be doing a graduate degree through Harvard Extension School pretty soon. I'd say about 80% likely.

When I'm in Cambridge if anyone wants to grab a bite and talk shop I'll be around. O0

Thanks! I'd like to take part in this AI wave, so this data science program is really appealing to me.

You can do most of the program from a distance, but there's an on-campus experience that's required that will be 3 weeks for this particular curriculum.

Two things?

1) What time of year?

2) I was surprised to see it was a Masters in Liberal Arts. Is that typical for a science degree?

Probably in the fall of this year!

Good eye! Yes, there is a master of science degree in the same subject that you earn when you are an on-campus student. The master of liberal arts title would be for people like me who are extension students, many of whom which are international.

Saw this little container thingy at the hardware store the other day… thought to myself it would make a cool little gold bullion storage case. So I bought it!

I just bought one of these online yesterday after remembering this thread.

Turns out the little container thingy is called a “credit card holder” or “business card holder”.

The Politics and Other Discussions part of the forum has been quite quiet lately; Was there a funeral and I missed it? ;)
DNA has its own language (code), and language requires intelligence. There is no known mechanism by which matter can give birth to information, let alone language. It is unreasonable to believe the world could have happened by chance.

Over the last week Politics and Other Discussions have comprised 5/11's of the active topics.

There were permabans that could have been week/month bans. Most people learn from mistakes

A few posters are less chatty now that the narrative is "maybe not" safe and effective enough, to force into every human being.

For me ... just another thing that I learn of first here.

Not been something yet discussed on C-Span's Washington Journal.

Other than listening to the five Sunday news talk shows I have little exposure to daily news.
