It's entirely possible that Omicron is the mutation we've been waiting for. The one that takes the next step towards the bug becoming like a common cold.
Absolutely that's the case. Coexisting with the host is a very common end point. Thus far it appears the variant is less severe in it's effects though I believe the "official" (whatever that means) judgement is that we don't know yet.

Who are they and what are they milking?

I have another friend (yes, another) that believes the vaccine is not only not effective, but dangerous. There is basically nothing in the universe that can change his mind. Just like people being categorized as Covid related deaths very liberally, my friend will categorize any deaths in the next 5 years as vaccine related if the person got the vaccine.

He's passed this onto at least one of his daughters, who decided not to be vaccinated and instead of being in class at college is doing it remotely from her apartment (I didn't even know that was still available) vs. getting vaccinated.

It'll be great when you prove your friend wrong after the FDA finishes releasing the data they used to approve the Pfizer vaccine... in 2096.

It means they want to see if they can still milk the pandemic for another year.
I think the only entities milking it now are the press organizations. Even the politicians are starting to chill out except for those few still riding the covid politics pony for all she'll go.

This is so spot on:
Q “Just got an e-mail that our office Christmas luncheon is canceled due to the Omicron variant. When, if ever will this madness stop? We have been working from home for nearly two years (which most everyone likes including myself) but this was a chance to see people from the office for the first time in 2 years.

My question to you is can we ever expect this sh*t to end, with the first word of a new variant, the usual suspects are in an utter panic. It’s a zero sum game for them. I am double vaccinated, but want life to return to normal as best as possible. And don’t get me started on the masks, which I loathe and the haphazard way the wearing of them are enforced. You can’t be a little bit pregnant, they either work or they don’t. So to wear them walking into the restaurant but can take them off to eat, coaches have to wear em and players don’t. When does this end?”

A. It ends when the vast majority of our country stops allowing covid to influence our lives.

Covid fear porn has, essentially, ended in red state America. If you live in the South or in any state that voted for Donald Trump you would never know that covid existed at this point unless you’re in an airport.

I spent the entire fall on the road. The stadiums were packed, the bars were packed, it felt like a 100% normal football season. Other than flying into and out of the airport, there was no sign covid still existed.

My advice to all of you who are fed up with covid regulations is to move to a free state.

If I lived in the northeast, on the west coast or in the Chicago area, I would have left long ago.

The only good thing that may have come from the covid insanity is allowing so many of you to realize you can work from anywhere and be just as efficient.
source
I disagree about the Red State thing. Texas is considered as Red as they come but my suburbs are still pretty Covid crazy. Masks and temperature checks still required in my son's school. If he even dares complain of a muscle cramp he is sent home and ordered to do a Covid test before being allowed to return. All concerts here have vax requirements. Even in the outdoor section of Home Depot this weekend I saw around 60% masked. Even though my city does not have a mask mandate, masks are still about as common as they were at this time last year, even by people sitting in their cars alone. I went to a take out restaurant the other day that only allowed 2 people in at a time. Everyone else had to line up outside to "remain safe." You may say these are inconveniences but I would not say there was "no sign" Covid existed.

Corto, you tell me at what point this continues before you acknowledge. Whether it's masks, vaccines, eating in a restaurant, downhill skiing, or driving on the expressway, every day people make choices without the government micromanaging them. Just bc some things are back to normal with inconveniences, does not make your point.
I’m not really getting it, sorry.

I still can’t carry more than 3oz liquids and have to take my shoes off at the airport. All theater, right? Where’s the outrage? Been 20 years….

I see more and more people in stores, Target and Menards today, without masks. No one cared.

I have little brain energy left to put so much effort into being pissed off and frustrated. And all it would do and did for a while is piss me off and get me frustrated, so why continue?

So, back in 2001 we all submitted to the 9/11 and other terrorist related travel requirements, and we all did it reasonably happily, thinking it was making us safer.

20 years later it is embedded in the system, and people at most roll their eyes as they take off their shoes.

I think the difference this time is social media and alternative news sources are amplifying the "vaccine doesn't work/will kill you/etc" and "masks are taking away my freedom" way more than they would have in 2001. 2001 was more chat rooms and email and mainstream media. 2021 is full on Twitter, FB, web news sources, etc with billions.

You can choose what to believe and get frustrated about. I got enough other shit to worry about that I don't care that I gotta flip on a mask to go to Home Depot.

I like your either/or scenario whereby either you are loving life and carefree like you guys or you are "pissed off and frustrated" like others of us. It is possible for me to go about my daily life and still enjoy myself but yet also still be very concerned about government overreach into our personal affairs. Just because I am worried doesn't mean it consumes me nor does it take so much effort as was stated above. It is one of any number of topics i could opine about in a thread such as this. I don't know why participation in this thread implies our lives are so unhappy.

Also, reducing frustration to having to put on a mask in a Home Depot or comparing it to a brief, rare event such as taking off your shoes in an airport is ridiculous. The frustration comes from the fact that we are 2 year into this and our lives are still being disrupted for little purpose. My son has now gone 2 years without getting to experience the field trips and overnight nature trips that classes before him got to take because apparently Covid spreads in the forest. He has had to wear a mask for 8 hours a day for 2 years now and he already had trouble recognizing facial cues before this. And his stories tell me that he has several teachers that have indicated that they believe Covid is much WORSE than we are hearing about and that the news is covering it up to avoid panic. So it appears that this disruption to his schooling is going to be permanent. That is not comparable to taking off your shoes before boarding a plane.

jalanlong,
I am saddened by the last 2 years of what your son has missed out on, and by the crap he has had to deal with. I am even more hopeful though that all this provides you both with an opportunity to discuss that life isn’t always fair, and suffering can make you stronger. Blessings.

j,

I'd feel exactly the same if my kids had to put up with that. Sounds like you live in a VERY blue state, which would suck. The frustration and anger is understandable for sure.

I think the fact of covid, it's ability to do some serious damage/kill, but yet as a % of the population not huge, but not negligible either, is a different issue from how your local government elected or unelected officials deal with it...I'd direct my anger and energies at the appropriate target. (The virus is politically neutral.)

jalanlong,

I understand and am glad it doesn't consume you.

I am obviously biased by the fact that whenever this is discussed, either here or in person with various friends, many of those who are anti-mask or anti this vaccine are so passionate about it that it seems like it must consume them. Looks like I am probably overstretching that in my mind, but definitely the email interactions I have with my buddy are over the top screaming "the vaccine is useless at best and going to kill us at worst." Multiple paragraphs, links to sites of dubious content, etc.

And I feel for your son. In the group I just had dinner with, one lady has three kids who all suffered badly in remote learning. I am blessed that my daughters came through without issue.

I still don't understand your area in Texas. Again, blue IL here, schools and activities are fully open. In fact tomorrow night and Sat is our Winter Celebration concert.

Have we lost the ability to be surrounded by death without going "bonkers"? I looked up the deaths from some of the world's largest wars just to see the comparison between war deaths and our current virus deaths; the numbers are staggering. We certainly live in better times now than in the past, even with the scourge of the current virus running rampant among us. It seems our collective "fear factor" is on steroids compared to the past. This is certainly not a comprehensive view of all deaths, or of all wars. I just thought it was interesting to think about how we seem to have gotten soft due to our becoming accustomed to an easier life than our predecessors. For example, look at what we have done to avoid the nastiness of death being thrust into our faces: many deaths occur out of sight (hospitals, nursing homes, etc. vs. in our homes), use of funeral homes to hide the blood and guts from our view, out of sight cremation vs. watching a body be lowered into the ground, etc.

M,

I think we would call this extremely blessed...the fact that we have the luxury to go bonkers over stuff that our forbearers would find unbelievable for its triviality. More harshly, some might say we lack gratitude for the blessings in our lives due to the time period we live in.

Call me stunned unless he lives in Austin. A quick internet search suggests in Texas no one can compel you or your school age children to wear a mask.

Of course the same search indicates liberal school districts are in defiance of the Gov's order.

That was actually the first thing that popped up on the search (including a Wikipedia entry) but I thought, No, that could not be what he was referring to. I also assumed that "Whataburger" was just some variant of "a Nothingburger".

Even though there has been no data to indicate that there is anything to fear about the Omicron variant, evidently you cannot be too careful. And again this is more than just being forced to wear a mask in Home Depot:

DePaul University in Chicago announced yesterday they would move classes online for the month of January

Middlebury College in Vermont, which is 99 percent vaccinated, is immediately moving to remote instruction and told students to leave campus immediately if possible. They will take all of their final exams online, and all athletic games and social events are canceled. Students who are stuck on campus may not eat in the cafeteria: All meals will be grab-and-go. Mask wearing is required.

Cornell University suspended all school-sponsored events and urged students not to socialize. The administration said that the 90 active cases of COVID-19 on the campus are "deeply concerning," even though not a single one has been severe or required hospitalization.
