Democrats reversal on illegal immigration
Huh, now isn't this interesting:
https://gop.com/flashback-democrats-tal ... ation-rsr/
Everything I've been saying about why illegal immigration is a problem has been stated by Democrats in the past - even some on the far left. Harmful to the economy, unfair to legal immigrants, competing with the native lower class for unskilled jobs, competing with the native lower class for welfare benefits, driving down wages etc. Even the fundamental insanity of their kids born here getting US citizenship. How come no one remembers this? In fact, I didn't.
And of course, when Trump says these things he is excoriated as racist. Well, so is Obama, Sanders, Schumer, and all the others quoted in this article. Granted, when Trump is talking he sounds like your garrulous, half-demented old uncle, but if you can manage to see past that...it makes sense.

Re: Democrats reversal on illegal immigration
Yet another indicator of hypocrisy. National debt terribly bad when GOP in congress and Dem in white house. Debt conveniently not discussed by GOP when reversed.
Actually not discussed by anyone anymore. I think they realize we've crossed some event horizon we can't return from and better to stay silent.

Can’t argue with any of that, WiseOne. I guess presentation is important.
Re: Democrats reversal on illegal immigration
I think you got that exactly right. It's almost unfixable at this point. Plus, there have been doomsday predictions from debt for many years, which have not come to pass, so people are just kind of over it. Are they right? I have no idea.Cortopassi wrote: ↑Thu Feb 20, 2020 8:15 am [debt] Actually not discussed by anyone anymore. Unless the laws of mathematics have been repealed, the debt doomsday is still on its way.WiseOne wrote: ↑Fri Feb 21, 2020 8:04 amI think you got that exactly right. As for the immigration issue, Obama's past positions would make him a right-wing extremist in the Democrat party today. The same goes for Schumer, Pelosi, Hillary, and the rest.
Yes, the Republicans have their share of hypocrisy as well, but this is beyond that. When Bernie is a "moderate", without actually moderating any of his positions, you know the Democrats are way off the scale.

Re: Democrats reversal on illegal immigration
That is indeed weird, isn’t it. Four years ago, Bernie was fringe. Now he’s the standard.
Re: Democrats reversal on illegal immigration
I haven't been following politics very closely lately. Is there actually a current Democratic presidential candidate considered more left-wing than Bernie?
Re: Democrats reversal on illegal immigration
Maybe not *more* left wing, but definitely *as* left wing. That's pretty much all of them except Biden and Buttigieg. There is also the highly vocal, even more left wing/socialist group (AOC, Omar etc) dominating the appearance of Congress as portrayed in the media. Not to mention the obvious extreme left wing slant of most of the media.
Example: CBS news article this AM about Trump's tightening of the "public charge" rule for immigration to include being on food stamps and Medicaid - as in, if you are considered likely to be on one of those programs for more than 12 months over the next 3 years, you are disqualified from immigrating. That makes perfect sense to me, but the article was filled with wild claims that this was racist, would prevent "hundreds of thousands" of immigrants from coming etc. Well, "hundreds of thousands" of people coming here and then immediately going on Medicaid and food stamps doesn't sound particularly good to me. My state and city taxes are high enough as it is, thank you.

^ What WiseOne said ^
It's all part of the idealistic free care for all, free education for all, we're going to "solve poverty" and "solve homelessness." All nice notions- if only they knew how they were going to pay for it, because even heavy taxes on the despised 1% is not going to do the job.
