Agree or disagree?

Post by vnatale » Mon Nov 04, 2019 6:04 pm

This may not be a fair question to ask since you are missing the context of having read the same 161 pages of this book plus this entire chapter I just finished with this concluding paragraph.

But nonetheless...do you agree or disagree with sentiments of this paragraph?

"Throughout the rich and developed world, we are not living through a crisis of wealth or material, but a crisis of character, a crisis of virtue, a crisis of means and ends. the fundamental political schism in the twenty-first century is no longer right versus left, but the impulsive childish values of the right and left versus the compromising adolescent/adult values of both the right and left. it's no longer a debate of communism versus capitalism or freedom versus equality but, rather, of maturity versus immaturity, of means versus ends."

It is from this book:

Everything Is F*cked: A Book About Hope

I'm finding it to be an excellent book. One which constantly makes me want to read it again, so as to study it and retain more of what is in it.

Prior to reading the book I knew nothing about the author or the book and it was an impulsive less than 5 seconds of thought decision to pull it off the "new" books shelf and put it in my bag of other books likewise impulsively chosen.

I disagree. On the contrary, the left has actually made everything about identity politics instead of character and merit.

As far as maturity, if masculinity were not so repressed and frowned upon (again, by the woke left), men would be a lot more mature a lot sooner.

It’s not about material well being, I’ll go along with that. Beyond that it’s all about the desire to remake the culture versus the desire to maintain the culture. And below that, at the political level, it’s about power as always.

I guess the only thing I would disagree with is the use of the word "crisis" for all these things.

I can definitely see things I would call gathering storms but I don't recall any time in my life where you couldn't sense those if you looked hard enough.

Just had a real family crisis over the weekend and it caused me to reflect on and appreciate how stress free and peaceful my real life has been since around the turn of the century, and especially the last 3 years since I retired.

The main thing I like about this forum is it is filled with knowlegable, intelligent people who respect each others insights. That is a rarity. Thanks to all who maintain an atmosphere of civility and respect for those who have different worldviews. It promotes an environment that is conducive to learning and growing.
