It's fine. I'll probably forget by the time I get to those parts.
And, yes, I knew they caught Eric Rudolph.

Smith1776 wrote: Fri Feb 12, 2021 2:05 pm Have you guys watched "The Vanishing At The Cecil Hotel" docuseries on Netflix? The girl in question is from my town, turns out.

Very interesting story and plenty spooky. It's a well produced documentary. Scary stories are always extra enthralling when they are true.
I haven't watched the above, but my wife showed me the elevator video on Youku some years ago. Very disturbing.
I assume you're talking about this video.

SPOILER ALERT:
Knowing absolutely nothing about the incident, it looks to me like a young woman having a psychotic break while alone in the elevator. Since the video description says she was later found dead in the hotel's rooftop water tank, I would assume that she wandered onto the roof and fell in the tank during the psychosis.

Now I want to watch the documentary to find out if I'm right. :)

What I really enjoyed about the docuseries was that it touched upon a lot of the environment and background that was conducive to the tragedy. It wasn’t just a matter of fact “this is what happened” kind of program. Learned lots about skid row in particular, and that connected in my mind to the Silk Road discussion we were having.

Can I just say, underneath the cheesy veneer of Kathy Scruggs, Carla Gugino is still the sexiest woman alive.

I watched a documentary purporting to explain coding and at the end i was treated to a warning about the dangers of “structural racism.” I guess they got tired of “systemic.” I’m down with diversity and agree that it’s important to have all kinds of people in the room when you program ♫ a just machine to make big decisions ♫ . But, the series is called “Explained” and the episodes are already short. I thought they were going to just explain what coding is and not try to indoctrinate me. Oh, right, it’s Ezra Klein’s Vox.

I'll bet they're infuriated every time they have to query something.

Closely guarded secret. There are no algos. Google is just a sweatshop of old white men, master ‘splainers. The tty’s are setup in an abandoned turkey farm in South West ‘Bama.

Close hold.

I've noticed that trend in other modern documentaries, too. I'll enjoy it until almost the end, then in the last 5-10 minutes it will shift noticeably to a more preachy or political tone to wrap things up.

The latest example is that docuseries "The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel" that Smithers recommended. I enjoyed it overall, but the last part of the last episode got a little preachy about Skid Row. The hotel was located right next to Skid Row, but the main situation that was the focus of the documentary really had very little to do with it. The location of the hotel was probably almost irrelevant to what happened to Elisa Lam.

hah, I have it on right now, Tortoise!

So far, i don’t find it that compelling. Maybe if Rhea Seehorn played the asst. manager.

"The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" is an excellent movie. The sequel, not so much.

The recasting of the two main characters had me salty in particular. Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara were such a great pair.

The Swedish versions were all excellent. I liked the American ones, but the Swedes nailed it.

I started watching it the other night. Was falling asleep during the first episode, which is all I watched. That concurs with you saying you did not find it compelling. After watching that first episode I tried something else. After watching that only episode have a difficult time believing what else could occupy nine (?) more episodes?

I did see those three Swedish versions and agree that they were excellent. Watched the American version at the movies when it came out and, again, on Netflix a few weeks ago. Was not aware there had been a sequel. What is its title?

Interesting! I didn't know there were actual Swedish versions. Now a lot of the movie regarding setting is starting to make more sense. I'll look it up. Hopefully I can find some subbed copies.

There are 3 novels that you can see on wikipedia. Go to the bottom and you'll see book titles, Swedish film titles and American film titles.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_(novel_series)
Probably won't be any more because the author died, at like age 50 I think. Scratch that. Another novelist has taken over.
Blomkvist is based on the original author.

Saw the first film in Key West and loved it.
Second film- I agree with Smithers --- oops, except I'm referring to the Swedish films. I haven't seen any of the American ones.
Read the 3rd novel and it was a complete snoozer.

As if you could want to be Keanu even MORE, here he is shooting guns while Halle Berry and other chicks cheer him on.

With shotguns.

Looks like a lot of fun.

Keanu Reeves is just a gem of a human being. A phenomenal actor too of course. I'll always remember how riveted I was watching Speed as kid. I can't decide if I like those movies or the Matrix movies more.

How can someone so famous be so low key and humble?
