Re: Coronavirus General Discussion
An interesting research paper that argues that the virus' main attack mechanism is against hemoglobin. The attack is via attachment points on glycated hemoglobin (a high blood sugar condition). This could explain to some extent:
1) Shortness of breath before notable lung damage.
2) Higher risk for men, diabetics and overweight (pre-diabetic).
The paper also posits a mechanism by which hydroxychloriquine would work if the theory is correct.

Same here, but I mean they generally send out door knockers for all the people who don’t bother to answer by mail or online.

My view of the census: It'll be a cold day in Hell before I volunteer information about my household's demographics given the very real possibility of civil unrest. By the way, did I ever mention that my husband is a former marine with PTSD?

A lot of those people are temporary employees hired just for that task. Will they increase the pay due to the hazard? Probably not, so I doubt they will get many takers. Of course there is a lot of unemployment right now but the very generous unemployment compensation payments will probably dissuade people from taking such a temporary position.dualstow wrote: ↑Sun Apr 05, 2020 10:10 pmSame here, but I mean they generally send out door knockers for all the people who don’t bother to answer by mail or online.

Yeah, and his huge combat boots are right outside the front door to prove it. That and all the 223 casings scattered around.

Ok, now I don't believe you anymore. A MARINE, leaving his boots outside (spider cave) and not policing up his brass? No, this cannot be.

A girl can't be too careful out here, Pug and Kriegs. It's when I start talking to him that you need to worry.

Just heard another great quote to memorize that I just heard on C-Span from the Police Chief of Buffalo.
"The virus does not move on its own. It takes people to move the virus!"

Right, it's so simple and common-sense, it makes all those people saying "the virus doesn't obey borders" sound like real dumbasses.

And, it qualifies as being one of those highly sought "sound bites", it can fit on a bumper sticker. In other words, it can be understood by the majority of Americans!Kriegsspiel wrote: ↑Mon Apr 06, 2020 8:50 am Right, it's so simple and common-sense, it makes all those people saying "the virus doesn't obey borders" sound like real dumbasses.

Like it! But it's more descriptive than proscriptive...

Stocks rebounding? I'm thinking this is a dead cat bounce of some kind, but it's hard to know for sure.
The market seems to be pricing in a best case scenario in terms of the overall economic fallout of this pandemic.

I am about 25% through the book. Great book so far. Some parallels are pretty spot on. And thankfully we live now vs. the 1300s!
Considering it was written in 1992 and set in 2054, the only major item that feels strange is the lack of mobile phones. Everyone was still hampered by having to use a landline in the book.

From the NY press conference today, the purple line is where the actual numbers are. Cuomo is talking it down.
There are definitely times I think people don't want to hear positive news...
