Did you guys see/listen to the Joe Rogan podcast with Dwayne Johnson?
Johnson had so many interesting stories to tell, but Rogan kept talking over him. It was very frustrating.
I started to become interested in all the Joe Rogan hype when he suddenly moved to Spotify. I haven’t heard a single podcast of his. Just clips in the news. In the 90’s, he was just a weird musclehead in a David Spade comedy series called ‘Just Shoot Me’.
I’m still curious, and I think I remember you saying there was an alternative to Spotify. Failing that, maybe he’ll return to youtube someday.

Vinny, I'm glad you enjoyed a couple of those podcasts. I might add that in all the podcasts I listed, not every episode is a stellar winner. Many are great, many are good, a few I jumped over after listening for a few minutes. Podcasts are just like us - some days are great, some good, some fair, and a few stinkers to keep us appreciative of the great ones. ;-)
Well, thanks for introducing me to the Hillsdale College ones as you've no doubt noticed I've quickly become a huge fan of Victor Davis Hanson. I will now have to read a lot of his books.
I will also try to discipline myself and stop listening to a podcast if I decide it is not for me. In general, I do make that decision for a series of podcasts, that after listening to several of them decide that there are better (for me) series of podcasts to listen to then that particular series, leading me to abandon those podcasts.
But I will still listen to every minute of a Lex podcast. For many of them I've looked at the title and said that this one is not going to be of interest to me but then they turn out to hold my interest, resulting in me being glad I did listen.

I like Conversations with Coleman (Hughes); Lexicon Valley (John McWhorter); Reveal; Scott Adams (although I disagree with up to 60% of it per episode); used to listen to a lot of Radiolab; and even though it’s pretty cheesy, Harry Shearer’s Le Show
Now you are talking, Dualstow!
Gave me a long list of new (unknown to me) podcasts to sample.
Thanks!
Everyone! Please keep them coming.
It's wintertime. That keeps me inside just about all the time. No time spent outside, either sitting reading and listening to music or doing things on my property. That leaves almost all my awake time being spent in front of this computer. I do a lot of work on it that allows me to listen while I'm doing certain work that does not involve reading or writing.

I did not. But it might.
One of Lex's strength. He let's his interviewees speak.
Through that discovered that Jordan Peterson is somewhat of an egomaniac. He was not there to have a discussion, conversation with Lex. He was there to unendingly show us how brilliant he thinks that he is.

As good as Victor Davis Hanson was in his podcasts were on World War II .... that is how bad these two were in these:

The two presenting these are extremely biased ideologues.
I have pity and sympathy for any students who are required to take courses from either one of them.
Neither should be teaching any courses to anyone at any level of education, public or private.
The only place they belong is on Fox News doing a Tucker Carlson type show where they selectively use the facts to push their agenda and to be viewed strictly for entertainment purposes only.

I spent Thanksgiving just outside Boston. I was lucky that the afternoon temp kept hitting 50F, so we had some nice walks in the woods. Now I’m back home and it’s freezing
Not a podcast, but I highly recommend those fireplace youtube videos. They make me feel warm.

Listened to the first two in their entirety. Part of the third (ran out of time).
My comment on the first one with the book author is that to make his points he used way too much anecdotal examples and extrapolated from tiny samples.
Overall for all of them ... they were the opposite of the way scientists (and, by my observation, also engineers) pursue truth. They first look at all the evidence / information and then make conclusions from it.
With these podcasts it is the opposite. Start with conclusions and then only provide the information that supports those conclusions.
I think these podcasts will only persuade those who already share their particular worldviews.

My next comment is going to be somewhat ironic given the title of "The Humble Skeptic" but I found the "The Humble Skeptic" quite arrogant in the certainty expressed by the hosts and his guests that they possessed all truths. On the other hand, everyone on "Thinking Fellows" expresses their beliefs with great humility. Primarily for that reason they will be far more effective in persuading others to accept their beliefs than would "The Humble Skeptic" people.

Listened to all of these (one of them twice because I could not initially remember if I'd already listen to it) from the most recent going back to September 25, 2023.
Definitely held my interest but the episodes are all too short. Far too little time to develop the message. I'm somewhat anti-American in that I prefer things long-form. Also, I am getting work done while I am listening. Work that does not require much of my mind concentration to complete, which allows me to both work and listen. But it is factory, production work so because these episodes are quite short I need to keep stop working to get the next episode going, thereby decreasing my productivity.
This is also quite ironic given the last episode I listened to ... which was them lamenting the watering down of Christian education. Their short, short episodes are perfect examples of watered down! I'm anticipating for them to go on developing their messages in each episode but, instead, they end!

Not even bothering with these. Way, way too short. Too low a ratio of content compared to the time listening and having to spend to get to each episode.

Vinny, FWIW, the Overcast podcast app I previously mentioned lets you make playlists of different episodes of all the different podcasts. The playlist can be as long as you want, hours and hours or more. That is one of the reasons why I like that app.
Secondly, it is very easy to skip an episode if you come to a stinker and move on to the next in the playlist.
Third, glad you found some that you like.

Thanks for all of that. It's premature to use Overcast as I am still in the sampling mode to see what I'd go back to listen for new ones and which ones I never would.

One thing I'm finally remembering to note is that I love the intro / concluding music that is on these 1517 Podcast Network podcasts. Excellent rock music!
